This image is well within the parameters for profile pics (491 x 123 pixels, 92 kb) but I've tried several times to save it (both by uploading and by linking from another site) nd I always get the error message "Unable to save image."

What gives???? I paid $18 for **this**???

That image is way over the size limits for a Profile pic.

See the note under the Browse window when you try to upload a profile image:

Note: The maximum size of your custom image is 100 by 100 pixels or 97.7 KB (whichever is smaller).

However, you can add an image to your Signature:

Note: The maximum size of your custom image is 500 by 100 pixels or 19.5 KB (whichever is smaller).

Nope, only $17.95.
