I would love to take some motor holidays in the south of Europe, taking my own car but I'm not prepared to drive the 3-4000km return trip just to get there and back! Motorail seems the perfect solution but it would cost me around £500 as a single traveller to get to Italy and back with a sleeping cabin.

By contrast, I can get a return flight for under £100.

Is there any way of getting better deals on Motorail?

Hi Graham,

Just a thought but you might want to contact some of the car transporter companies.

For example, a lot of cars are delivered to the UK on transporters, and most of the time they go back to Europe, (Italy included) empty.

I have had some cars moved about like this and it isn't too bad, after all they are used to dealing with cars.

thanks, John, but I am not located in the UK most of the time. I suppose the idea could work in any country, but it is not very 'bookable'. You just need to get lucky it seems
