Default Garage car lift questions...O/T

I know a lot of Rennlisters have installed car lifts in their garages.

I know nothing about them so my questions are very basic:

(1) What is the minimum height and width for a standard lift?

(2) Does anyone have a particular brand or supplier they recommend????

It depends if you are looking for a two post or four post.
Most two posters have a bar across the top, the fours are open above.
I got my 4 poster from The Lift Super Store in Oakville.
http://www.liftsuperstore.com
All the specs are available on their site
My wife and I installed it over the weekend, but they will do the install for you as well.
The garage is 11 ft high, and 12 ft wide.
I have narrow "18" shelves on each side of the garage, and get 5'8" under the lift on the second last lock.
I can put my car up and hers (BMW Z3) fits underneath with lots of space.
This the one I got, basic, but I don't need anything bigger.

My garage is mini at 10' x 20', I got my pro-park 8 from direct lift and had them install it while I watched with a beer in hand. LOL My height is 10'1" and I can put the 928 and any average size sedan or wagon under with about 2" to spare.

My lift has the adjustable ladders, which IMO is the way to go especially if you have a good slope in your garage. The guy's in Oakville will try and sell you the welded ladder lift, but it won't work well if you have a slope IMO. My garage slopes down 2.5".

Also I prefer not to bolt them down. Mine has not moved at all and I use it alot.

When it comes time I'll be installing an M1 Single Post lift from American Custom Lifts. In my research so far these lifts provide the best space utilization for smaller garages:

Is it for a single door or double door garage? what are you putting underneath?
are you or your wife driving underneath or between the posts? What do you really want the lift to accomplish. All questions you need to ask yourself before deciding.

I have 10'6 ceiling which gives clearance for my wife's Cayenne to park below the 911 when its stored. I have 9 foot wide garage doors, so I wanted a min of 108" between the 4 posts so she wouldn't hit her mirror coming in or going out. All or most all lifts are made in China......but make sure they are certified. Princess auto sells lifts. I installed my own lift ( not hard but takes about 16 man hours).
I bought a direct lift as it was the only one that satisfied all my requirements. From Buffalo as the dealer up here was a dork. Parts are readily available should something fail. But I am a DIY guy so I love doing this stuff.... sourced and installed my own boat lift as well 16 years ago and it still works flawless to date.

I went to the lift superstore and they did not have a satisfactory product for my requirements. I was looking only for a 4 post lift as I did not want a post in the way of my wife or me opening a door everytime you get in or out of the vehicle below the 911. Plus the 9000 lb Direct lift will also lift my bigger SUV when I want to do work under it.

I have an AAMCO 7k two post, good solid USA made lift I picked up off of kijiji for $1000 almost 10 years ago.

My ceiling is 12'-1.5" the guy told me the lift was 11'-11" great!
Turns out the cylinders stick out about 3.5" at full lift, lucky my steel ceiling bends enough to clear. When I retire and downsize I'm keeping the lift or buying a new one.
I'll never be without a lift again.

I have been looking at this Max Jack Two Post lift

https://www.maxjaxusa.com/buy-purcha...e-package.html

It is portable, IE the posts are on rollers, that you can move on and off the anchors. there is no top bar, and the columns extend to a maximum of 7'6". A very good option imo of you have low ceining height and arent using it for storage

Quickly looking I couldn't find an answer, is this just a parking/ storage lift? I was wondering if there was any center beams or something that would allow you to get the wheels off the ramps for dooing things such as wheel changes or brake / suspension work etc.

Direct Lift for me. Self install. 10'6" ceiling, hi-lift garage door kit, Liftmaster 8500C shaft mount garage door opener. We really should have a sticky on garages

Here's the thread on my garage.

Split my maxjax with friend since it's portable, we have 8 Porsches between us so it stays busy!

As you can see Ronan, you have to answer a ton of questions before we can give you answers.

Your garage looks great! I agree...a garage sticky would be a great time saver for those looking for ideas. I'm dong a garage reno currently. I had a Direct Lift for 5 years with no issues and would buy another. I just sold mine to another 'lister as I don't need it any longer.

You can pick up in many cases yourself and save shipping costs and if you do, you'll need a u-Haul car trailer because of the length. The lift is about 1800 lbs if memory serves

Delivery & set up I think was quoted at around $700 ???
