I agree, thanks Ronan.

I got this photo last October in Monaco, it was parked just outside the Main Casino. I researched it a wee-bit, I think a few replicas have been made along the way. One original might still be out there, IIRC. From what I have read three original were made, and two destroyed in WW2. The one in the Porsche Museum is one of the replicas, again that is IIRC. I think the one I saw and photoed was also a replica. It had current Austrian licence plates. It did make my day to see one in person, and on the road, even if it was a replica.

Cheers,

Here is the basic story.

Three cars built in 1939 for the Paris Rome 1940 race. The ***** wanted resemblance to the KDF Wagen ( the Beetle) so the roofline was retained.

The war broke out and the race never happened.

of the three cars, one went to the Porsche offices in Berlin. It was destroyed in a bombing.

The other two were retained by the family and live in Austria. One was created. ( see below).. we will call that car 2.

car 3 survived intact.

Car 3 (originally branded VW) was rebranded a Porsche in 1946.

This car was sold by the Porsche family to Otto Mathé, an Austrian specialist lubricant maker in 1946 along with a lot of spares.

Car 2 was used for target practice by the US army, the roof cut off and disappeared.

Roll on 50 years.

The owners of the Museum Prototyp in Hamburg buy all of the spares and specials built by Otto Mathé although the intact typ 64 has gone to an owner in Austria, although it has lost its original prototype engine. ( the cart still exists)

The museum discovers strange part numbers among the collection of spares and special racers Mathé had built. The all are autheicated as being from the missing car 2 that had been shot up by the US army. They discover the engine, gearbox, instruments, all of the running gear, steering wheel and other parts.

They decide to rebuild car 2 They have no body so they get the only surviving car on loan and measure it to the mm. There are few photographs but they realize the roof and dimensions of car 2 are slightly different and build it accordingly..takes five years.

Here are some original pics I got from the Porsche archives....

Let's just call it a mid life crisis, but yesterday's 65th birthday present was a nice lapis blue (reminiscent of the first car an Alaska blue 72 beetle) 2016 Golf R
