Just so that I have some clarity and perspective...
VW Dieselgate
11 Million vehicles impacted, no direct deaths, and settlement $15B

GM Saddle Tank issue
6 Million vehicles impacted, over 2,000 direct deaths, and settlement of $500M

Pinto Tank issue
2 Million vehicles impacted, close to 200 direct deaths, and settlement of $350M

Takata Airbag issue
Over 70 million vehicles impacted, 20 direct deaths and hundreds of injuries, and settlement of $24B

Sounds like the "environment" has some pretty good lawyers in its camp.

It is not as though the only diesels out there are these ones. Aren't other diesels damaging the environment as much as these noted ones ? Does the "lie" justify the penalties? (in other words how many people would not have purchased said diesels if they knew the "truth" ? - I'm thinking most people would have purchased just the same). Ah the magic of politics ! Maybe even Ralph Nader might giggle over this one

I asked this same question some time ago. The rebuttal was interesting....something along the lines of increased emissions leading the global warming and leading the millions of deaths world wide....sort of the butterfly wing initiating a tidal wave on the other side of the globe. Sort of like that oil can i threw in the trash in 1982 that has since lead to the civil wars in the Middle East and the rise in the price of tea in China.
