I disagree. I find the STi to be very immature, Golf R is a much more grown up car. If you want full adult get an S3

I honestly don't get it. The point of the thread is to have a conversation among, what I assumed were, car enthusiasts. I like lots of cars and I've owned lots of different kinds of cars (event a Dodge Challenger SRT-8 for two months...don't ask)...

If someone can't concede that a Mini or a GTi or a Golf R is a fun car and enjoyable to drive / own then IMHO they are only concerned about image and play into the stereotypical douche-nozzle that buys a performance car.

To me it's all about engineering and design. Heck, I was admiring what a handsome and apparently well made car the Kia Rondo is while I was sitting in the C4 in traffic this morning.

+1, beautiful thing about cars, is the variety
Just, never buy a Kia or Hyundai, they literally have no soul or pleasure driving...

Hopefully you can get the Golf R with regular seats not those buckets that you can hardly get outta.

I'd go with the GTI probably a bit more comfy than the R and still pretty quick.

But if you are definitely looking at the R, drive the Sub or Ford first

I'm just kicking around ideas. I'll probably just continue to DD the C4S.

That said...might just go for the cheapest GTi as a DD beater.

The Subaru doesn't work for me...just never liked the feel of them. The Ford is too aggressive styling-wise for me...as a DD at least.

There are days where leasing a Silverado for $450 a month seems like an awesome play! ;-)

100% agreed. I spend far more of my time in the general 991 forum since the Canada forum seems to be full of this knuckle dragging nonsense. Whatever.

Back to the point, for me the Golf R to me is hard to argue with... not sure there is another car that offers the performance + features + build quality + fun to drive elements at that price point. If anyone else can point out another 300hp AWD hatchback (also German made and with dual clutch transmission) for $40k I'm all ears.

As for ride comfort, based on back to back test drives we found the Golf R in comfort mode (adaptive dampers) rode even nicer than the regular GTI. Love that it gets far more aggressive via a few presses of the mode button. Much more noticeable swing from Comfort to Sport to Race than my 991.

I had a 991 C4S for a year as a DD. Fantastic car, loved it.
But I decided that a two car solution was better, so I got. Golf R(Mark 6) and a GT3.

I drove the R for 70 000kms and 2 years. I sold it recently for a Cayenne Diesel.

The R is nearly a perfect DD. It's a fantastic car. It's fun, practical, and something you don't obsess over. I would not hesitate to DD one. It will be far more comfortable then a 997 C4S IMO. But not sure if give up a Pcar for it, unless I could have have the R plus a fun weekend/track car.

Also, I found the maintenance cost at the dealer for it to be very high and most VW dealers are poor. I went to three dealers.

Good luck.
