Been building custom pc's for 20 years, my only advise to you would be buy quality parts if your building yourself, doesn't have to be the most $$$$. I would recommend Asus for motherboards, rarely had one returned, Samsung ssd, Kingston Ram, dedicated nvidia for video. For cpu stay with Intel. I3 or I5. Just a note the ssd and video card are probably most important peripherals for speed. And get at least 8gb of ram. May want to stay with Windows 7/8 64 bit.

Just my 2 cents.

I dealt with Canada Computers and the experience was great so far....1T HD, 8 GB Ram, GTX970 GC, i5 all very close to my budget. System is upgradable if needed later. One mistake though.. there is a friggen' wireless adapter in my bathroom scale, but apparently you cant assume that one comes with a computer nowadays (?). my mistake for not noticing this, but it would have saved me a trip if they highlighted that it only has Ethernet connection. Thanks to everyone for the feedback and advice.

good to hear.. the wireless is an add on card, theyre pretty cheap. It does come with some motherboards built in, but I guess it wasn't specified. One thing though.. I assume you're using your own Windows copy and didnt buy one there. Make sure you're using a 64bit version of Windows (so it can use more RAM than 4gb) and then I would maybe add another 8GB of ram into the system you bought. 16gb will make a difference for gaming and speed it up a bit.

The next upgrade would be a SSD hard drive (then you can use the 1TB drive for storage, etc). But definitely get the extra RAM if you can afford it. You can put it in yourself it's easy. It snaps right in the slot.

It came with Windows 10 64bit. So I'm good there. I'll let my son test the limits on it over the summer and upgrade as needed. Thanks for the advice.

Yeah real gamers run Windows 7

Windows 8 sucks and I have heard with Windows 10 it invalidates it if you change ANY hardware.

Good advice in this thread. I would personally go and buy the components and build it together with your son. Another great use of time and deepen the bond.

If you want something that will last for a few years you need to spend around $2000 after tax

-i5 Skylake CPU quad core
-Corsair Liquid cooled CPU cooler
-DDR4 ram - minimum 8GB
-256GB SSD (Samsung/Intel) for primary OS
-Western Digital platter drive 1-3 TB for storage. Get black drives if budget preferrably - stay away from Seagate.
-EVGA or Corsair Power supply - 500-750watt gold rated PSU
-A cool case that he will like to look at for a few years. I love the Corsair stuff and have 3 of their cases
-Asus or Gigabyte motherboard
-Windows 7 (preferred) or Windows 10 as the Operating System
-Gaming keyboard and gaming mouse with decent DPI - I like Corsair and Razor stuff.
-Video card - will cost you the most money. I really like the GTX 1070. See if you can wait and get the ones that have the aftermarket air coolers attached. The reference one isn't the best.
-Gaming monitor - second thing that will cost you the most money. Don't bother with 4k monitors unless you plan on getting multiple video cards and secondary Power supplies to get a decent Frame per second experience. I would recommend a good 1920x1080p gaming monitor. the GTX 1070 should be able to give you 60-100 FPS on almost any modern game.\
-Gaming head set. Again something with 5.1 or 7.1 surround sound that will immerse you in the game. I prefer the wired units and again have bought Corsair and Razor stuff. Good value for dollar.

Hope this helps! I'm a big computer guy so feel free to PM me if you have any questions.
