Default Just closed the deal on this

Plan is to bring it home, drive it for a few months and decide if I'm really ready to sell the 72. If I do keep it the first item of business will be to replace the interior - I hate burgundy. But it's got 38k miles and a fresh top-end is part of the deal (90% leakage on #6 as it is now). That's impossible to pass up.

What's wrong with burgundy? It's unique and original

My 84 Audi 4000 was tan with a burgundy interior--I actually got used to it after a while. It's a "German" thing, what with all the browns, tans, etc. during the 70s and 80s

Cheers to the new car!

Maybe for some, I can't stand it. I'm going to replace it with a tan interior. That's my favourite colour combo.

Yep. I had a local friend who knows these cars even better than I do check it out and when I told him that he was shocked, as was the seller's mechanic, because the car drives so well and is so low-mileage. The mechanic looked into it with a boroscope and couldn't find anything like a carbon deposit or similar, so he suspects a worn valve guide. He's doing valve guides on all 6 cylinders as part of the deal, and I'm having him replace all the headstuds while he's in there.

Looks like a very nice car! Congratulations!

I can't see a worn valve guide being the culprit for the high leak-down, unless it was so badly worn that the valve hammered itself on the seat to the point of deforming the seat/valve interface (due to high lateral movement). That would have to be a really worn guide though. Either way, the top end should resolve it...

Nice Boston cah. Perhaps you'll be able to keep them both. A lot of guys have the makings of a Porsche armada.
