New car opinion- BMW M or Porsche for Daily Driver
#16
I'm thinking so too, I've always liked the 997 TT and from what I hear the engines are built very strong. I also like the fact that they are much better priced and should hold their value pretty well from now on (unlike any of the other cars which will be on a steep decline).
I've never driven a turbo. Do dealerships typically let people test drive these cars? I've had 3 996's and 1 997 Carerra S but the never a Turbo.
Do people with the manual 911's as daily drivers get use to the stiff clutch pedal? I'm wondering how the car would be in traffic (not that I drive in that much traffic) ? I've had one tiptronic 911 and I really didn't like it.

I have both the M3 and a few 911s
I use the BMW as my daily driver. I put on snows
and it runs perfectly in the winter months.
I just find a c4 even with snows not as secure.
Further, 4 doors and or even 2 doors on a Bmw
is a lot easier to get in and out of
as well you have the trunk. I would go with either
the M5,M4 or M3.
At the end of the day, it is up to you. just hate driving
my 911 in the snow and or rain, and do not mind taking
out the M.

I DD my C4S and I love it.
20K per year, no problem.
We go up north with the kids every weekend and the Q7 stays in town.
The more snow we have, the more fun it is!

Depending on your kilometers you put on your next daily driver.
Get your snow tires organized, before it gets cold.
I was going through rear tires every 7-8 months. Always had an extra/next set in the garage. Ready. You never get $crewed when you buy them, when you don't need them yet.
Cars up on the hoist, belts poking through ...
treadless=cashless

haha that makes sense, I know how expensive tires can get for these cars. Thanks for everyone's advice
I went to go see a 2013 M6 convertible yesterday at BMW Toronto, they didn't really let me drive it saying "typically we don't let people test drive the M cars" but after sitting inside it, the car feels huge! It is very nice inside but seems a little too big for me. The size of my past 911's felt way better.
I did also see a new M3 inside the showroom which was very nice as well

Interesting car story. Don't know where else to post.
Some things you won't notice in buying a new car.
My brothers brother inlaw has a 2012 X5. It broke down up north.
Next to the middle of nowhere. Electronically dead, no start, no lights.
Called BMW roadside, flatbed arrived couple of hours latter.
FF to the end of the story. 28 hours later they had the car loaded.
Back to the middle of the story. All wheel drive. BMW did away with the neutral on the gear selection in 2012. So they could not load the completely locked up vehicle. Funny, how sometimes progress, can slow you down.
My wife's X5 is 2011, and has neutral. I now know I may need it.

For this exact reason, there is a transmission lock release that allows for the vehicle to be in neutral without any system being on. Left rear access panel in the trunk there is a tool to set the transmission to neutral... grab the tool, get in drivers seat, lift up one of the cup holders, insert the key, and {CLUNK} you are ready to go!!

How does your wife like the 2011 X5?[/QUOTE]
My wife loves it. We bought it off of lease from her sister. Wouldn't do the 20" tires again. They seem to last about 2 seasons running around the city. I'm sure the AWD chews them up.
Ppo- Not my 2012 car problem. I will though research this key tool in the back. It would be a good thing to learn. More cars will be getting this feature. I'm sure the Minette flat bed driver was not that knowledgeable.
his car is filthy

Actually the one I picked for my sister is also a off-lease and also has the 20" wheels. That's not good news about the tires but the 20's look so much better than the regular wheels. I suppose that's the price you have to pay for the looks

Here is what i have considered....
Forget about buying anything pre owned. (and forgret about BMW)
Buy or lease the new 991.2 C4S. Great year round 911.
Replace it every 3 years for the rest of your life and enjoy the latest greatest each time one is launched.
You will see the evolution first hand which could be fun and the new car smell is great.

I don't see the point in keeping new 911s as the service costs will become astronomically high as technology becomes increasingly more complex. I feel this is the same for really any car..

Wow.
Maybe we should start a new Rennlist forum for us poor guys.
Actually I'd have to have money falling out of my pockets to buy (or lease) any car that depreciated $1,000's of dollars every month.
It's just a car ......
