Importing an ex US car from Canada to US - Any duty required?
Hi Guys,
Anyone has experience exporting an ex-US vehicles (previously imported to Canada from US) from Canada back to US? The US CBP website seems to suggest the 2.5% duty is not required but my broker says otherwise.
Below is an excerpt from the website:
Re-Importing A Previously Exported Vehicle
A vehicle taken from the United States for non-commercial, private use may be returned duty free by proving to CBP that it was previously owned and registered in the United States. This proof may be a state-issued registration card for the automobile or a bill of sale for the car from a U.S. dealer. Repairs or accessories acquired abroad for your vehicle must be declared on your return and may be subject to duty.
Any idea?
Thanks guys.

I recently sold my 1993 911 (which I bought from the U.S.) back to an American buyer. He was required to pay the 2.5% duty to bring it back to the U.S. I was told the only way that it would not apply is if I sold it back to the person that I bought it from (according to the shipping company).

I've sold three US cars back to the US in the past few years. There is NO duty to pay by the US buyer for a Canadian car that was previously owned in the US and heading back to the US.
What you need for the border is proof the car was owned by a US owner prior to me. I gave him a copy of the previous bill of sale and that worked. Other option would be a copy of the previous owners title.
