Default Battery storage question..

If I leave my car in a unheated garage plugged into a trickle charger throughout the winter without driving it, will the cold still drain the battery?

I'd throw it on a regular charger every other month for a quick 'top-up'...just keep an eye on it, if it loses its charge even once I find they deteriorate quickly after..

Take the battery out... put it in the basement on a trickle charger. Has the extra benefit of making the car extra difficult for a very determined thief.

Because batteries and the battery tray are rust magnets (literally), I prefer to remove mine annually, and clean the contacts and the area around the battery.

After doing this for a few years, eventually you will buy a much lighter battery! ;-) Like a Braille - https://www.braillebattery.com/

Depends on the year of Porsche. The removal of the battery is a hard reboot - you will loose all data in the car - ECM included and this can be a pain in the butt in the spring if you need a clean air test as well as resetting radio codes an such. Your car also has to re-learn map modes during your first drives in the spring. Most of the battery 'tray' issues were for the older cars and older battery technology and that remains valid for those car years.

A smart charger - as opposed to a trickle charger, (there IS a difference) is pretty much all that is required in modern Porsche's. I have used a smart charger for years without removing my battery and killing the electoral support system and the car starts up in the spring at first crank every time.

I resist the urge to start the car at any point during the off season until I intend to drive the car in the spring.

I do agree with a lighter battery for the future.

Smart charger is the way to go.
They cost a little more money up front, but are well worth it.

Agreed, I meant I use a smart charger in a non heated garage. Plug it in and forget about it until Spring. 12 years and running in various cars and boats and no issues whatsoever.

Check water levels 1st if it's not a no maintenance battery.
Otherwise, "Set it and forget it"

I use the CTEK 3300 and Motomaster Eliminator 2/4 amp battery charger/maintainer plugged into the cigarette lighter. As far as I can tell all trickle chargers are "smart" these days. Just get whatever Canadian Tire is selling. It'll be cheap, warrantied for years and work as well as anything else.

Go Ctek all the way, auto equalizes and desulfate. You will get 10 years out of a good battery if you use a Ctek every winter.

I think they all have similar circuitry and do this now. CTEK's marketing is just a little "smarter".

I take the battery out and put it on a computerized charger > Optimate. Then outline the hood latch steel loop and remove it and store it in the frunk , only two scews , hood cannot be then locked by a do gooder.
