I took the alternator out and took it to AMG Auto Electric in Hamilton.
My car is a 6 spd manual.
What did AMG say? I took mine there a few years ago and they said they couldn't do anything with it. I was pretty unimpressed.Originally Posted by Punko

Timely thread: Alternator failed on the GT3 on Friday, the first day of a 3-day track event at Mosport. Got the warning and kept going for 1.5 laps until car stumbled and died at top of back straight (had to get towed back in).
I knew that my battery was marginal, so bought a new batt at CT in Bowmanville Friday night. Pulled the fuses for the lights and was able to finish the weekend by charging up the battery between sessions.
I'm in the Georgetown area so will try to find someone local, otherwise will go to AMG.
Thanks guys.
BTW, Oakville quoted $1250 + tx for a rebuilt and DFC between $2k and $3k for new, I don't get it.

That is a good idea....I was able to limp home, but it would have been smart to pull the daytime running lights fuse.Originally Posted by FFaust

Had a situation last winter where the alternator went on a buddy’s car, he drove it home and then we had to limp it to my house to in a middle of a snowstorm. I called it ”Project Apollo 13”. It was all about electricity management. We cut everything, heat, pulled the connector off one head and tail light, dimmed the dash, windows down so it won’t fog up, didn’t use signals and so on. 1km before my house it started to chug, so I told him to turn the headlight off too. I was behind him and my headlights were enough for him to see the road. We rolled into the driveway as the engine died from lack of power. It was a close call, too close for comfort.Originally Posted by Punko

I doubt they could do this, but to be friendly to Porsche owners who love the cars and not the status, they should offer locally sourced and fair priced rebuilding services for parts like calipers, axles, master cylinders, clutches, alternators, starters, and steering wheel nuts.
There are just too many Porsche owners out there looking to keep these wonderful cars maintained at a reasonable price.
Hmmmm.... business idea #542. Porsche part rebuilding while you wait at the bar/lounge/strip club... Oh okay... now I get the $2K - $3K price.
"Yes dear, it does cost $2300 for a Porsche alternator, and I have no idea why they made me wait until 3am until it was finished. Also, I took a cab home..."

Also, seem to be many options online (Amazon, Pelican, Auto Atlanta, etc) in the $200 - $400 range.
Glad you found a cheaper solution

It's always nice to share a beer with you,Thomas & Terry at the end of a hard
day at Mosport !!!
See you again in August !

For sure Phil, that's half the fun right there.
Heard back from Nineapart today: They want $250 for a used one with a core exchange.
I ended up taking mine to a local shop in Milton for rebuild. Will report back when I get it back.

Instead of Nineapart, next time call Whale Tail Porsche Parts. Randy is a lot kore resonable with his prices.

They (more like he) has a good sized inventory for Porsches of all year and model. Not sure how big his collection of 996 parts are but I have gotten 996 parts from him that came from different cars (twi identical parts from two cars), so he has at least a few 996s in pices. I would call before emailing, easier to get a hold of Randy that way.

Francois, glad to hear it worked out with the alternator. We're trusting Thomas' car will be back in shape for the club race weekend.
Phil, fun chillin' with you this past weekend. See you at the club race.

Terry, interesting that the guy that did my alternator, when I asked what else he did, said that he also did 944 steering pump rebuilds. Just saying
Good luck with Thomas' car.

Good luck with Thomas' car.
