Parts Inquiry.
Hey guys, I'm in need of a new starter. Just wondering if anybody knows of any other local places to get a BOSCH reman starter? I know Hunter and Mantis can get them, just want to know if their are any other places I can try. I'm going to try partsource, napa... anyone have ever tried German parts.ca?
I'm not sure if it's affecting the alt in any way. I do know that last year the symptom was I would go to start the car and a loud grinding sound would happen. What was happening was the solinoid was not fully extending the motor gear to engage the flywheel. So I pulled the starter, it was completely covered in clutch dust and gunky so maybe that might of caused the non full engagement. So had it rebuilt, I'm assuming they just cleaned it up and replaced nothing. Drove it for a bit then stored for winter. Spring came started the car and every now and then the car would just make one loud click and not start, then on second/ third try it would start. Checked battery, battery was bad (8yr old battery) replaced for new with slightly better CCA rating. It worked good for a day or two, then it got worse and worse till it only just would do the click again (solinoid making gear extend but starter motor not spinning) checked the battery, battery still perfect. So went to pull starter once again but cleaned off contacts to make sure it wasent a loose connection/ bad contact etc. All good there. Then had my GF crank the car while I jiggled the exposed power wire from the solinoid to starter motor and voila car started to crank. Then tried to crank while not wiggling the wire.. No dice. Then wiggled the wire, it cranked. So I'm guessing that the starter has issues and it's just better off replacing it with a warrantied oem part. I'm gonna do a alt check once it's running again to make sure the alt is ok too, because I know the alt can be an issue too. Usually the voltage regulators go on them, I just bought a new VR, so if theirs an issue ill swap that out and go from there. Pheww.. That was long lol

I would check the alternator, battery any any calbe that os associated with it before signing off as a bad starter. It is also very possible the brushes haven't been replaced in the starter and now they are not making contact with the rotor part of the starter. A good realible rebuild shop can fix you starter and be as good as a Bosch reman.

Ya I agree with you on the alternator to starter cable, I'm prob going to perform a voltage drop test on everything to be sure. I've heard of the alt to starter cable being culprit for some things, like batt recharge. But I'm not sure if the alt would actually affect starting? Would it? Power and ignition come direct from the battery and ign switch and the starters grounded to the tranny. Right? Issues with the alt would only affect recharge no?

Yup....its F$@ed. Maybe it a good thing it didn't move when you tested it. Those suckers have a crapload of power and unless clamped in a wise, it will jump out if your hands.
So I swapped out the old starter for a brand new Bosch starter, and poof all problems gone. So it's safe to say that it was defiantly the starter that crapped out. I tested the alternator to make sure that it was charging the battery, and a full 14v was shown when car was running, with the car off 12.9v. So its safe to say all should be good! Thanks guys for all the suggestions and insight. And thanks Zookie for hooking me up with a new starter and getting it super quick!
