Default Tips for trip to Stuttgart

Those of you have been, mind offering some helpful tips? Where to stay and where to eat and what to do? I will by flying in to Frankfurt and then have 3.5 days before flying out. I have already scheduled the factory tour and planned to visit both the Porsche and the Mercedes museums. What else?

I think we've had this topic a few times - https://rennlist.com/forums/rennlist...endations.html

Have fun by the way. I'm there June 9-11 before going off to Le Mans.

If you have an extra day or so. I was able to get a 1/2 day in to view Sinsheim on the way from Heidelberg to Stuttgart. Saw sign on the side of #6 took the exit for Sinsheim and was able to marvel some of Porsche's earliest work

If you stay at the Graf Zeppelin, eat dinner at the Michelin-starred hotel restaurant Olivo. If it is on Saturday night, ask for a window table. Car crazy Stuttgart uses this road for cruising.

So far I have scheduled plant tours at both Porsche and Mercedes. I also plan to go to the Porsche Museum and the Mercedes Museum.

The other thread mentioned outlet shopping, given the U.S. outlet shopping that we have near us, is it worthwhile? If so, which one? Metzinger or Style Outlets?

I assume you can't take the rental car to drive at the Nurbergring?

´just got back from there. Looks like you know what to do/where you´re going.
Motorworld is also worth checking out. There´s a nifty hotel at Motorworld called the V8 hotel you might enjoy staying at although it´s 25 mins outside of the busy city. Have a good trip!

If you have to pick only one to go, which one would you go to?

And guys, how long should I plan to stay at the Porsche and the Mercedes museums? From what I gathered, you can spend a whole day at the Mercedes museum and Porsche museum only needs 2-3 hrs, does that sound about right?

Porsche Museum: length of stay depends on who you are with. Fellow P Car gear head = many many hours. Spouse? = 2-3 hours You can stretch that if you buy her lunch and some wine and then convince her to go back up the escalator for another hour or so by dangling shopping after... Just saying.

Mercedes Museum = normally an afternoon. Me = a day. My spouse actually enjoyed Mercedes much more then Porsche. Mercedes pretty much shows the development of the motor car where as Porsche show the development of their firms products since mainly 1948. This isn't a knock on Porsche as they are a far younger firm.

Sinsheim!! Hands down. Come on, the only museum with a TU-144 AND a Concorde! And you can go inside each one.

And Speyer is only 40kms away - you can get there in 15mins... They have a Russian Buran space shuttle...

Shopping: The best shopping is the Königstraße which is a short walk from the train station or around the corner from the Graf Zeppelin.

Please don't go to Europe and go to an outlet mall. Please. (not that there are many anyway) So many small wonderful shops you can find anyway.

Just look for 'Biergarten' signs

Biddy-Earlys is an Irish Pub (Google it) not too far from the Königstraße and everyone speaks English (which just about the whole of Stuttgart does anyway).

Lots of cafes and pubs open most of the night. We were on our way back from one pub and ended up drinking more beer on the sidewalk of another pub at 3 dark thirty when some Detroit fan saw my Leaf's hat and wanted to talk (argue) hockey!

Thanks Guys! This is great... First trip after being back in singledom so I am looking forward to it.

Last question - I have read conflicting info about the need for International Driving Permit. Anyone care to shed some light on this?

Thanks again!

[Last question - I have read conflicting info about the need for International Driving Permit. Anyone care to shed some light on]

I was in France and Germany last summer and had picked up the International Drivers Licence prior to going. It's under $30 at CAA and easy to get, you don't have to be a CAA member. I'm still not really sure if I needed it but thought it was better to have and not need then need and not have.

1+ on both the Porsche Museum and Mercedes! You'll need at least half a day at Mercedes because of the shear volume of things to see and read about. My wife really enjoyed the learning experience there and she is not too much of an enthusiest.

You don't need one for Germany. I rent 991S's through Avis - they just grab my Ontario license, wand the barcode and away I go. There is a website that will tell you all this but I'm too lazy to look for it. If your renting at Frankfurt airport you'll be good to go. These international licenses are really for nations that can't figure out age dates or can't read English such as Florida...

When are you going to be there? (There are lots of local date specific festivals and events) May 1st is a HUGE deal across Europe and lots of stuff shuts down.
