Funny thing is everyone is talking about the passenger and not a mention of the driver....sad really, that we have come down to who's face is on the screen more, is more important....

I have heard the car was heavily modified. I also heard but can't confirm that they were doing 45mph in a 15mph turn.

Poor bastards, brutal way to go.

There is a lot of nonsense in the press about "should the car be banned?" it was ALWAYS a challenging car and that was known, not a car for hooning.

Here is an old note on it I wrote in Autoweek in 2007:

Ronin, well written as always.

The media, who for the most part do not know anything about cars should just stop. It was an accident, they happen all the time.

If we were to start banning dangerous "high performance" cars we wouldn't have any high performance cars on the road! Some of the scariest cars I have ever driven are the mid-range "high performance" breeds like Mustangs and Camaros. You want to talk about tail happy and brakes that don't always match the power and weight of the cars. Not to mention some of the mental Italian breeds from the Lambo and Ferrari factories.

The shop that was working on it was very quick to blame the car. You would think they would have been tight lipped with the seriousness of blame here.
Steering fluid on the front wheels? Hmmm
BTW Nice write up Ronan.

The interesting part is that apparently this crash occurred some 10 minutes after the two occupants were seen leaving the shop where the charity event was being held, there could have been a driver/passenger change in those few minutes, not sure the coroners office has confirmed which occupant was in which seat, so it is still not 100% clear who was actually the driver at the time of the crash.

There is something ironic in the media-hype when for the last few years it has all been about too much electronic stuff, electric steering, PSM, etc etc, taking away from the challenge of a car that requires proper driver skill, and then when there is an unfortunate death of a movie star, suddenly it is all about requiring all this stuff.

Perhaps there should be a clearer warning that these cars are not toys for the unwary.

Technology can be both a wonderful thing and a curse.
It can help prevent you from getting in trouble (ie: traction control) but can also give the novice a false sense of security and power that the car with it's technology will save you.
I've read so many stories about how he was a good driver etc etc but even great drivers crash.
Just look at F1.

As I said earlier, if the same had happened with a no name driver, it would have been driver error.

But the press is already blaming the car.

Of course the car is to blame...it's America...the land without personal responsibility but plenty of lawyers.

Regarding technology - not having it certainly keeps me in line. No pun intended.
