What the new insurance black boxes record..
Lots of hoopla abut the Ontario government promise to reduce auto premiums, which that have deceptively linked to fitting insurance black boxes to your car.
A UK posting from someone doing the development there suggests the following:
SEEN ON PISTONHEADS
"This is the list of stats recorded (we've done some work with this data hence I've seen the list of whats recorded).
Speed by time of day by speed limit
Maximum speed by time of day by speed limit
Driving time by time of day by speed limit
Location at 1 minute intervals
Avg speed at 1 minute intervals
Time over speed limit by time of day by speed limit
Harsh braking by time of day by speed limit
Harsh acceleration by time of day by speed limit
Any data transmitted from Engine Management System at 1 minute intervals"
Well, trading in the 911s for something sporting, like a Toyota Solara.

I will never put that in my car. I will move out of Ontario.
How about some focus on proper driver education? How about some focus on enforcing proper driving behavior?
It's so pathetic! The number of people I pass on the way to work each morning on the 401 that have no clue what they're doing.... I'm preaching to the choir here.

dashcam
sorry but slighly OT hijack
if you fit a dashcam
are there companies that would "lower" your insurance premium
and also would they take it as evidence (in your favour) for any claims?
thanks

It will however be useful evidence in case of an accident so if you have one, i'd run it.

Lets just say it wasn't widely received.

Race Car
My father-in-law fitted one in his Dodge Caravan and I laughed...I told him I wouldn't be caught dead with one.

Can you picture the data from a panic stop in a Caravan?!
Insurance guy: '250ft stopping distance from a speed of 100kph. He pulled... huh? Somethings wrong here? Really, is it possible he only pulled .06Gs Fred? Better yank that unit for QCing.'

I see bad things about to happen.
If you swerve or jamb the brakes to avoid an animal, debris or even a child, your insurance goes up as it records emergency maneuvers, "you must be a poor driver, driving agressively or are driving under the influence. which is it Mr Smith" $$$$$
Heaven forbbid that you need to accelerate to get on the highway, and exceed the entrance ramp speed limit before you merge onto the highway.
This will only make people afraid/hesitate to perform emergency maneuvers. Remember photo radar and people slamming the brakes just before they got to the van?

and that is the exact problem
dangerous driving, can ONLY be accessed by a human
NOT a machine
in the UK, speed cameras and intersections ACTUALLY increased accidents, because people slammed there brakes on
The only traffic cameras I think are great are STOP light/Red light cameras
you jump them you deserve everything you get !
