Default CEL - yikes!!

Threw a cel on my way home tonight in my 96 993. Changed the fan shroud on the wknd but cant imagine that has anything to do with it?

Anyone have a reader i can use to check what it is? I am in the Beaches or if someone could bring it downtown?

I suppose i could grab one at CT but not sure i would have many reasons to use it (or at least i hope not!)

Thanks!

There are 2 things that bring the CEL on a 96+ 993.

1. The O2 censors ( you have 2)
2. the dreaded SAI passages are clogged.

The first one is easy to fix/ replace
The second issue is a bit of a PITA. Read on the 993 forum. Plenty of info there.

Yes thanks, have read much on the damn SAI issue. Had an O2 sensor go when i first bought the car 4 yrs ago so hopefully its the other one. Am hoping to avoid a top end rebuild - ouch!!

on my old 993 turbo I used to get cel occasionally and a spirited drive would clear the sensors, and cel would be gone after clearing code. I also have a reader, my office is yonge and eg if you want to bring it by during day tomorrow I could bring it to the office. pm me if interested. good luck

I give it a pretty spirited drive quite frequently so prob not the issue unfortunately.

Another lister has offered his services so have arranged to meet up already. Offer much appreciated though and will let everyone know the outcome

Thanks

Well apparently there are more than 2 things that trigger the CEL.

W00zie ran the diagnostic for me this aft and it said it was "Fuel pump relay final stage - code 167"

Not the dreaded SAI

He cleared the code and it did not come back on on the ride back to my office. Now I just need to find out if this is a one off error or whether I need to do something. Quickly checked the 993 board and nothing came up. Doesnt seem to affect performance as far as i can tell

Thanks all and esp w00zie!!

could be the DME relay that often fails and any 993 or 944 owner should have spare in glove box. used to be $10 now over $100 at stealer or can go aftermarket. suprised you didn't have trouble starting if it is the fuel pump relay.
should be easy fix. glad to hear

Thanks but what is the fix? Do I just replace the fuel pump relay? There has been no problem with starting the car. Where can you get a spare relay and what type is it? CT?

Always a good idea to keep a spare! Saved me from being stranded in a shopping mall lot. Easy plug and play swap. Very cheap insurance for the money. You could also repair the old relay but for $30 I really can't be bothered.
