It comes down to trusting the shop. I figure CT store have more to loose screwing up than most other shops because they'll have to come good for mistakes they make.

Walk the car or the wheels with the installer or advisor before it goes in so you're both in agreement of condition. The machines we use now are almost fool proof and 80% of newer cars out there have low profile 17/18/19/20 wheels so it really isn't anything we don't deal with on a daily basis.

Not to mention, this isn't about who's mounting them... it's about tire prices. Based on my comparison, who installs them is somewhat moot because if you're concerned with getting the cheapest deal, your concern isn't really about quality. If it's about quality, buy the tires from your local specially shop and support them so they can stay in business and continue caring for your Porsche.

I bought a set of rears from Allen this spring. Hankook V12's. I shopped around includng the states and the prices were close. Allen was a bit more but then didnt have to deal with shipping etc. just drove up and he installed them while I waited. No hassle and supports a local guy who provides a good service. The price differential certainly wasnt material.

Makes sense to me. If you are concerned about your rims then you are going to be well aware of their condition well before ANY shop has a go at them. If ANY installer agrees that they were in x condition and they come out in y condition then they will have to make good on it

I think CT gets a bad rap sometime but like he says, its a bigger business than most and I am sure they keep a close eye on customer feedback. Besides we are talking about mounting tires, not ripping your engine apart

Smaller tires are much closer priced and in some cases we beat their price (hoosiers in my case is one example).

Don't even bother comparing pricing if you're shipping to canada though. Shipping alone goes up $100 plus brokerage fees.
Does this mean CT sells Hoosiers?

I've bought 4 sets of tires from Tire Rack. I had them shipped to a local shop and I could not even get close to that price buying them in Canada. I'll check out 1010 next time though.

just slightly over half price, including shipping, in my case. It would have been less than half, however i had to ship from the furthest warehouse, adding 30 to the shipping costs.
i have to drive to the border. big deal.
almost all Canadians live a stone's throw away from the land of the free.
My question, are the retailers making this extra profit?
corporate windfall profit?
In essence, we, as Canadians seem to subsidize lower prices elsewhere. Gasoline might be an obvious example.
Local food, yes. The tires can come in by mail.
I will support my local profiteer by letting him install the tires, this task will no doubt cost double the American prices, as well.

the last set I saved about $500 and was travelling to the states at the time anyways. since I was gone for 3 days no duty and since shipped from out of state no tax. Plus better choices of brands, sizes etc... and probably even stored better in warm climate.

Not going to the retailer...

On those PSS tires in the above comparison we make about $60 a tire. Considering we pay 5% of the retail price in shipping to corporate office that means less than $40 to pay our bills with.

ATR I think you are right. If the tires are installed at close to the same price, I would buy them at Can Tire.

Not a lot of profit.
Essentially you would be better off buying from Tire Rack.
Am I missing something?
thank you for the insight.

I don't really have a choice who I buy from. We order directly from Michelin and the other suppliers for special order stuff like above.

I couldn't buy from Tire Rack any cheaper than I could buy from corporation though. The bottom line is that there isn't much GM% in tires but its a good business that drives traffic.

I just bought a set of 4 275/40/20 Hankook Ventus RH07 for $734 US shipped to my door, recieved them today.... no duties... from discount tire, they will beat any price tire rack has..... plus I got a $75 mail in rebate.... $660 for a set of 4 is pretty good.... My dad has a garage and his wholesale price for any 275/40/20 (hankook) tires was $900 +... definately order from discount tire....

I should note that Hankook was the one brand that the tire rack was WAY lower than us on. I priced out a set for a GT3 and TR was $700 minus a rebate and we were $1500. Can't win em all!
