Default Spring Cleaning updates...

Just of couple tidbits of data, that I thought I'd pass along.

The Good news.

Remember when your dad was using Turtle wax? Last year, I was out of 303 aerospace, and couldn't find it locally. I ended up buying some "Turtle Wax Ice Total Interior Care" in a spray bottle from CTC. It's a milky liquid so it's likely waterbased. From the interwebs, this is supposed to be a good thing.

I've used it a few times on the Jetta, Porsche and Audi, on the vinyl and leather surfaces, and even wiped down the glass on the gauges with it. It seems to be working well. Not shiny, and everything seems relatively dust free. It didn't costd an arm or leg either.

I've probably car cleaned with it 6x (albeit 2 of those cleanings were the boxster which never gets super dirty anyways). 4 of those cleanings were in the family haulers Jetta and Q7. I still have almost 1/2 a bottle left. It has a mild pleasant fragrance, the 303 didn't.

I have a couple high end interior products waiting to be openned from a recent eshine order, but am happy at the moment to be using the Turtle wax product.

The bad news....

In the summer 2010, I bought a bunch of stuff to work on the paint on my black Boxster S. PC DA, and compounds and polishes from Optimum Car Care via eshine. I was very happy with my results.

Last weekend, I went to bring back the shine on my boxster. It's got a plethora of tiny stone chips on the hood that I still need to deal with, but I wanted it to look good at 5ft. The compound went on fine, but the polish (which I had a 32oz bottle of) was watery. I shook the crap out of it. (like probably 10 minutes worth of shaking, but I couldn't get the texture to change back to a cream. I ended up using it, but the results weren't as fantastic as I remember back in 2010. The 1st polish I did with this back in 2010 used maybe 10% of the bottle.

A couple calls to eshine (Surprisingly, they didn't get back to me within 48hrs, which led to a second call) said that they couldn't do anything about it, since it was bought in 2010. The back of the Opt Polish II label says 'satisfaction guaranteed' or something to that effect. I wasn't too happy with that.

I called Optimum Car Care out of TN, and they have told me that the polish's only have an 18month shelf life, and they would try to get a hold of eshine to help settle this problem. They realized that being in Canada, makes the cross border shopping a bit of a hassle, and it would be advantageous to work something out with their cdn distributer.

They didn't hear back from them, and offered me a $20 credit, and advised that I get a 8oz bottle since I don't use it very frequently. The bottle costs $11.99 direct, but I'm a bit gunshy as I don't want to be stuck with brokerage fees on shipping.

I'm going to contact eshine with this info, and see if Optimum is still willing, if I can get a 8oz bottle shipped from them as a replacement to save on the cross border hassle.

Given the apparent short shelflife of the Optimum Polish II, I recommend anyone looking at it to order smaller quantities based on the number of vehicles you want to 'paint correct'. For reference, I think I used under 3oz for one application on my boxster (no roof, 2 doors). Might be 4oz worth for a small sedan, but my 2002 Jetta doesn't get the love anymore. My wife's Q7 might get the PC treatment this year, but it's roof is pretty much all glass.
