I have heard of engines being replaced for other reasons , not one IMS bearing .. still .. replacing an engine on any of these cars before its due days ( in the 100,s of thousands ) to me seems totally unacceptable.
Do you mean that you have not heard of one IMS bearing failure on our small forum? If so, my IMS bearing on my 02 C4S let go at 84k with a required engine replacement covered by CPO. I ll stick with the air cooled although I've been really happy with my 03 turbo which has a 964 block and a properly supported IMS.

You actually saw the failed bearing when they removed the engine?

Yes I did. It was actually the bolt that broke where the o ring fits on at a slightly lower diameter part of the bolt. Bolt sheared off at that point.

I had the IMS and RMS replaced on my 2002 996 at 100km. Peace of mind and the P car drives like new with no leaks after 15K. MVS Motors does a really good job...the IMS is a skilled job...you only have one shot at getting it right. If anyone wants a reference, PM me.

The yes the bearing failed and caused the centre shaft to snap.
