Default GT1 block coolant fittings for DE

This effects all GT1 block cars. 996 GT2/3, TT, 997.1 GT2/3 TT RS, 997.2 GT3 RS

UCR Tech Centres will now have to visibly check that either the fittings have been repaired by welding/pinning or that the car only contains water/waterwetter for track use.

There are multiple fittings that need to be done, some of which requires dropping the engine.

Anyone got theirs fixed? where? how much?
I'd hate to do some fix and then have some sort of problem happen later because the fix causes some sort of other problem with running a car in winter temperatures.

Had my fittings welded a couple of years ago. It was done @ Fiorano when I had to do some transmission work. Very common fix - and necessary - for 996 GT3's. Didn't realize the problem was as widespread as it appears though. Do cup cars also require this fix ?

It isn't mentioned in this Feb Provinz's Tech talk or on the UCR forum. I doubt it though. I assume Cup cars and RSR's don't have this problem since they are raced everywhere.

Ran Water Wetter last year, but got the fittings pinned last month at Fiorano. Pretty much the cost of an engine drop. Pinning has the benefit of not requiring the manifolds to be taken off of the engine.

When I took out the coolant last spring, Pfaff Tuning charged me one hour to do the work. I brought two clean 20-litre pails to recover the coolant, and then put it back in in the fall. It's not too big of a deal.

Would be nice if the newer cars did not have to do this, but Porsche never came out and said that the process had been improved, so we must assume that all GT1-block cars have the same potential problem.... including the cup cars.

I think that the RSR's have screwed in fittings if we can believe the pictures posted in the 997GT3 section.

Just curious - is this now on the UCR tech inspection form ? Has RSR implemented similar policy ?

Not yet but they said soon. I imagine it will be mandatory this track season.

I hope RSR does the same!

In Rennsport we've had that debate. Trouble is we can't mandate things which void the warranty on the car. That being said I run Water wetter too.

I'm worried water wetter won't lubricate the radiator and places that need it properly and thereby rust out the cooling system pre-maturely.

I been running behind 996 turbo's for over 8 years with a non gt1 block 996 now and never had a problem, yet they allow the 944's to explode all over the track.

I've had mine pinned. But with the coolant drop that happened to me 2 years ago it was not the fittings. I had a hose split wide open. Fortunately everyone behind me stayed on track. Lesson learned and I now run Water wetter.

Can we/Rennsport oblige all liquid cooled cars to run water wetter instead of coolant?
That is what I've done since moving to a liquid cooled car.

This is not a problem isolated to the Porsche community. Last season is was in two heart stopping situations. One was approaching turn 8 at very high speed into the braking zone behind a GT3. The other was at the transition between turn 8 and turn 9 behind a Corvette. Scared the crap out of me in both cases, but no damage done. Does this then come down to the policies of the track management? Given that enforcing a water wetter rule would reduce participation in DE events dramatically, I doubt they will do it.
