Default NAFTA Brokers?

Howdy folks,

I'm trying to purchase a new front bumper for my car, from California.

The company I'd like to purchase from has given me the options of UPS (300 shipping + brokerage when it gets here, $$$) or truck freight ($225) but I'd have to find my own NAFTA broker?

Not sure exactly where to start here, anyone been through this before and can offer some insight? I'd appreciate it immensely.

Thanks in advance

Truck freight is a pain in the ***.
I think having someone broker it thru for you would not save you much over UPS + brokerage. Plus it won't be door to door for LTL.

Definitly don't waste time doing it yourself, last time i had to clear a bumper through it took a total of 5 hours plus 2 trips.

UPS will at least drop it off right to you.

Seeing you show Toronto location, just have it sent to CBI USA www.cbiusa.com in Niagara Falls, NY and drive across the border to pick it up.

And order a whole bunch of other parts at the same time to ship it to CBI USA so you can make the trip worthwhile.

You will save the gas alone by shipping to the US address vs. Canadian address.

Send it to CBI USA in Niagara Falls NY, then drive down, crossover and get it. You can call your credit card company and have the address noted as an alternate shipping address.

I order a lot of stuff from Cali, first benefit is out of state shipments are tax free (no CA tax), then ship it to CBI in NF,NY and pickup in order to avoid UPS rape/brokerage fee. Small items could be sent USPS direct to your door to avoid the brokerage fees not really an option for a bumper.

I've had a few large items shipped by truck from the US ... mainly a roll bar and just recently a six point cage.I always do my own brokerage, especially if anyhting ships via UPS.It's pretty simple, once you get your tracking number you advise the shipping company to hold your item and you go there, pick up your forms and go to the nearest Canada Customs office and clear your items yourself, thus saving you the brokerage fees, then you go back with your signed forms and claim your item.

Cheers !

So basically the best "out of my hair" scenario is let UPS deal with it and bend over for the bill. Anyone have any personal lubricant?

Cheapest option is to ship to Niagara and make the 163 km drive to pick it up. so 326 kms, at the rate my 1991 chevrolet caprice workhorse is burning gas nowdays that's almost 100 dollars.

I'm going to have to think long and hard on this one because I hate throwing money at UPS, and who knows what kind of brokerage charges I will be getting on this 300$ made in USA Porsche bumper.

Looking at over 600 bucks to get this thing to my door it seems.

Anyone from NF coming to Toronto in the next month? I can be a gracious host and provide cold brewed alcoholic beverages and the warming feeling in your heart when you watch a pcar owner finally get his hands on a part he's been waiting for.

Thanks again everyone

I'd help if I was getting other items, but just don't have anything in mind that I need/want to order at the moment.

So it would be $300+$39 for HST+$100 for gas=$439 plus you can fill up for cheap at the US side, so it's not too bad compared to $600 especially if you get other items too.`

Thats not including the 300 UPS shipping quote he gave me to get it to Toronto, probably a bit less to NF though, so it'll probably boil down to 600+ brokerage for the UPS deal, and 550 or so if I go the CBI USA route.

Going to see what else I can bundle in on the deal, may have to postpone getting this bumper as a lot of the parts I'm looking for for the 944 are almost made of unobtanium 'round these here parts, so as I source more of them I can work on a bundle deal. This current part I'm ordering is built to order so as long as the company doesn't go under I should be fine.

Yep sorry I forgot the actual shipping part, should be quite a bit less to NF.

CBI USA will hold a part for you no charge for up to 3 month even if you don't set up an account with them, I did the math a couple of years ago and it just wasn't worth setting up an account unless I was going to get 30+ packages a year, so you can always order the bumper if you know you will be picking it up with other items in 3 months plus lead time to make the bumper.

Not much contribution to the shipping cost dilemma - but, I'm a HUGE fan of CBI in Niagara Falls! Last item I picked up was my Yakima LoPro cargo box a few weeks back, saved about 500 bucks on the item itself and another 500 or so in shipping/brokerage.

If anyone is interested in the outcome, decided to add a 944 turbo euro rear bumper and some misc suspension items to the 924 CGT front bumper to make the drive to NF, NY a little more worthy.

Best solution I could come up with "Yes honey I do have to buy both front and rear bumpers, I can save some money that way"
