At that price range originally posted. Get a mezger engine which comes with the 996 Turbo and 996 GT3 or go to the older engine that came out prior to the m96/m97 like with a 993. Starting to get out out of the price range would be 2009+ Cayman S and 2009 911's. The Mezger engine has proven to be bullet proof. The 9A1 engines are an improvement but havn't been around that long. Though they are used it in the 997.2 Turbo which says something.
Thanks for the advice. I am looking for a car as my every day driver (my other ride is a motorcycle) and so was thinking that newer might be better. I don't want to buy an older car and have to start sinking money into it. What do you think?

Stick with a newer car for a DD. The 987 platform is a good choice and anything with warranty is highly recommended if your concern about IMS.
With the 78K mileage, honestly this car should be mid to high 30s at max. Low 40s you should be getting something like this:

If you want to avoid the whole IMS, then you'll have to look at 2009+ models.
Good luck!

For that kind of money you can get a 997.1 from the US which IMHO a much better buy. Here are some examples for Cars.com.
