Just an update.
my suspension was replaced with a $400 NIB JOM coilover kit from kijiji. (tax in). $80 for strut/shock mounts on all 4 corners. A few choice words (will pray for forgiveness) trying to get the strut to seat in the knuckle. about 6hrs in a messy garage over the weekend.
Rides wonderfully now. Firm, not harsh on my snows. Will see what's life like once I get the 45series all seasons on. 99% of clunks and rattles are gone. I'm about 1.5" lowered from OEM. I can get 2 fingerwidths between the tire and fender.
I'm contemplating an alignment, although I didn't remove tie rod ends or the lower ball joint so I'm not sure it's needed on a mkiv chassis.

Stay away from those, my brother had one and it was very problematic. transmissions has a lot of problems and to fix is not cheap at all, 3k, and is not the first owner I heard that had problems with a 1.8T Jetta.

Just bought a 2011 TDI Comfortline last month... I have put 7200kms on it already... I drive 50000km for work every year, doesn't include personal stuff.
I have got 4.5L/100km @ 115km/hr. @ 120 I get 5.0 and at 140 I get 6.0!
My commute is from Oshawa to Colborne, 90km 1 way.
I love the diesel! I am now looking for a Cayenne diesel to replace our 4.5L V8 once I get it rebuilt!!

I had the total opposite experience with a 2001 1.8t Jetta. My father bought it from my neighbor at 300K kms. 4 years later it now has almost 500K km. We changed the clutch and timing belt at 400K. The transmission, axles are still original. The Radiator went at 450K, the turbo went at 475K. The valve cover was never off. It does like to eat ignition coils on a regular basis but those are only $40each. The car was very reliable.

We have the 2011 Q7 3.0L TDI clean diesel, and I think we get about 10L/100km with it. I have to do the paper calculations to check for sure.
We got it about 18 months ago with 32,000km on it, now it has 84,000km on it. We've had 2 check engine lights.... Both related to the Adblue system.... This 2nd one may require some expensive parts, but it should be covered under either CPO or emissions.
The clean diesels apparently require a pretty hard to find oil. About $100 worth (9L)

I've got an '06 Jetta TDI wagon (Manual of course), and it's fantastic. 310,000km and no sign of stopping. I "adjusted" it on a guard rail in a snow storm this winter and had all the parts to repair it (Bumper cover, headlight, front fender & liner) in a couple hours for around $200. It's mostly invisible to anyone who looks at it (police included), and I have no problem parking it wherever. I'm a believer.
It's about the complete opposite to my very shouty red car...
