Lightbulb US-Canada Import - Ontario Vehicle Importer Experience

Does anyone have any recent experience of importing a Porsche from the US to Canada using an Ontario based importer? If so, would you recommend the company that you used?
I am contemplating the idea of buying a car from an approved Porsche dealer in the US but will not have the time to deal with the paperwork, research, etc. involved in getting the car to Ontario.
Thank you in advance for any information.
John

Importing it yourself or not..........do some research.

Its not hard to bring the car over yourself, as long as your organised.

Thank you for your suggestion Mozsan. had come up us import's name when doing some reasearch.
So, if I understand correctly, you researched the vehicle and arranged for inspection and transportation and us auto import handled the paperwork, payment of duty/taxes at the border, plating in Ontario and delivery to you?
Did you buy from a private or dealer?

Christen, it would be easier and cheaper if I could find the right car at the right price as close to the border as possible (buffalo, etc.) but, since I am only looking at cars available at dealerships, I have noticed that large dealerships in LA and other major US cities further away from the border have more selection and sometimes better deals.

I was asking because sometimes myself or some of the guys I work with do pickups. Imports is part of my business, but if the timing and location are right I sometimes do the pickup myself. Tends to be cheaper than shipping, and I enjoy the drive, depending on where it's from. Eg. eastern seaboard down to Florida is $1000.

I used TFX International. They handled everything from picking up the car in Cape Cod to bringing it over the border and dropping it off at my mechanics. No issues at all from my standpoint. PM me if you want more info.

Strazzg,
Bought private..
US Import needed Bill of Sale and Original title prior to pickup to arrange import docs beforehands..They arranged safety and emissions too, Dan said if there's a problem with emissions etc, he would put temp plates on car, for me to finish in Toronto, but wasn't necessary.

you can't put temp plates on a car in Ontario without safety and emmissions as I understand it.
Strazzg; be sure to go see the car in person before importing....many have had suprises and yes from Porsche dealer. Be very careful of nondisclosed accidents. What are you looking at?

Yes you can. That's precisely what the temp permit is for.

IMO000 just brought one over. Ask him how easy it was.

Not hard to do at all. You could have it delivered to a dealer in Buffalo and pick it up there. Or possibly a transport station where auto transports are done.

Temp plates on a car without safety an emissions is OK.
My issue was can't get it registered (to get plates) without insurance.. Insurance company would not insure it until is was registered in Ontario.. anyone see the issue with this? Talk about a Catch 22

Not exactly.
I had my car brought across by a transport company who worked with a broker.
I paid the broker in advance for the tax & duty, and picked up the car in Hamilton and drove it home.
My experience went like this:
1) Picked up keys and paperwork from the shipper and went directly to the DMV.
2) Showed my insurance card for my other 2 cars and paperwork for the 911 and got a temp permit. (remember, insurance companies provide temp coverage for transport purposes) I did the same thing when I bought the Benz in Quebec. Just went and drove it home, then registered it here.
3) Drove car home and proceeded to get the legalities out of the way. E-Test & Safety only, as my car was over 15 years old and didn't require RIV.
4) Picked up proper insurance paperwork and went and got my plates.

The only problem I had was my insurance would not cover the car until it crossed the border. I was able to convince the seller to leave his on until it crossed into Canada.

I "could" have done that, but the time between when I purchased it and when TFX finally got around to delivering it went outside the time period for the insurance company to cover it (according to my broker, you don't even have to tell them you bought it.. if you have a bill of sale, it is automatically covered for X days (cant remember how long, seem to think it was 15 days) to the extent of the least insured vehicle you have with the insurance company (just make sure you do not have a vehicle in storage with perils only at the time)
