I bought one of these 6 years ago and have over 165K KMs on it (all city). The SOB is the most reliable car I have even owned, almost bullet proof. Depreciation sucks large, but I plan on driving it into the ground. It's no Q7 by comparison, but one great truck.

our 1st month with the q7, by our gas, (i mean diesel) logs
we've driven 2714km and put 258.4L of diesel in it. giving us an average of 9.5L/100km, probably 80% highway (95-130kph) and 20% city.

I have a gl diesel, have logged 25,000 kms since march 60/40 hwy/city with appx 1,500 kms trailer towing (15L/100 kms) and have averaged 10.3L/100 kms...I have a heavy foot but very impressive for a 5,500 lb vehicle.

No doubt in actual $, the q7 is more expensive to operate than the Kia.

Only experience I have was as a passenger in one as a service shuttle. My wife drives an 05 4.4i and we like it but the 3.5d and new gen Toureg diesel are high on the list as replacements in a year or two.
Both are probably smaller than the OP wants. My neighbour just got the LR4, with 3rd row, for his wife (replaced their LR2) and he loves it.

I purchased my 2011 Q7 TDI stateside and saved just shy of $26k last year compared to what the Canadian Audi stealer was selling new '11's for. Mine was purchased for $57,500 (USD), had 1,500 miles on it, and I got it back home here for just a little over $65k (Canadian). Alters the depreciation curve a little (read = a lot) and no hassles like BMW Canada will give you in terms of the inspection process for an X5. Just my $0.02.
