Lienholders are noted on the title itself.

car fax will note if clear title or not.
be sure to get ppi. repairs can be expensive on a 26 year old Porsche.
even though over 15 I believe it still needs recall letter.
how do you plan to drive it home? what state is the car in? do you have insurance binder?

how long ago was this?
Canada customs is not supposed to accept the title unless stamped. and if you try to bypass us customs they can seize the car (and truck if towing) and you will never get it back!

I was more paranoid about title issues than anything else.

I had the seller send me a scan of the title. I saw it was stamped as the lienholder was cleared.

I called the States DMV. They said clear. I called the "previous" lienholder. They said clear. I had a lawyer friend run a background check and DMV search too.

And before I bought it I also confirmed with the border that they too said it was clear.

Car is in fantastic condition, mechanically and cosmetically. I'd drive it home. Insurance binder? Like a record of the owners insurance, or my own insurance on the car?

I borrowed a dealer plate from a friend. That's the best way.

Nice!

I was thinking just use the seller's plates.... I'm sure they could be convinced.

I just went through this- over 15 years old, you don't need a recall letter but you will have to do DRLs. Cost to bring over is 5 pc GST and 6.1 pc duty. If you really want to make it easy, do what I did and let TFX go get the car for you

I brought an 86 in last year...no DRLs required. Trackday who inspected the DRLs?

famous last words...get a ppi. and if you don't please don't come crying to us once the car gets home and needs 10k to to drive it.
binder is when your insurance co covers you before it is registered. good luck.

I have relatively recent experience importing an 86:

https://rennlist.com/forums/911-foru...911-intro.html

A couple of points:
- not sure about ON, but in NS I have to have DRLs (I think until car is registered and plated as antique at +30 years old, if one chooses to). I'm currently (well not yet this year, but soon) using fogs as DRLs.
- its an 86, so no 6.1% duty ( see my experience in post linked above)
- insurance was simple - called my ins co, gave them VIN and date I would own it, and they sent me a PDF of proof of insurance effective that date
- plate - I used one from one of of our other vehicles. Illegal, but I was prepared to accept the risk of getting stopped. I had checked into it, but in NS at least, I could not get a temp plate until I had registered the car here (and even if i got a temp NS plate, it is only valid in NS). Couldn't do that till I got it across the border and home with bill of sale and former owner's registration signed over to me. A big part of the fun was driving the car home and I really didn't want to make a third trip around the car purchase. Where I purchased (Massachusetts), they will not issue (or apparently recognize even an out of state) temporary permit. This apparently varies from state to state.

Good luck.

Lex

PS. I love your avatar, however, as I was scrolling past one of your posts, my wife happened to look over my shoulder. The comment was something like "What the hell are you looking at !?!?!?"

That was in early 2008. Perhaps things are tighter now as that was when the import rush began.

Lex, did nothing happen at the border when customs typed your plate in and saw that it was registered to a completely different car?
