Jonathon's '82 911 SC Thread

Ok guys, I havn't had an official introduction yet so I figured I would write one up.

It all started when I was in University doing my undergrad. A friend of my dads asked me to come along to Mosport one weekend and I ended up getting my first pro-racing mechanics job with TRG.

https://forums.pelicanparts.com/uplo...1330913506.jpg

I worked off and on with them for a couple of years through 2007-2008 doing Grand-Am Koni Challenge stuff.

After that I got hooked up with GMG doing SCCA World Challenge GT and have been doing that ever since with a couple of short stints into ALMS and Patron GT3 Challenge.

At the same time I kept really busy with school racing activities in Formula SAE. I ran the powertrain department during my time there.

Here is a shot of our F2008. I'm on the right. This was after coming 2nd place to UofT at a technical design presentation made by myself and my friend Steve. (We were a startup team, so to come 2nd to a team like UofT was a great finish for us.)

Here is a shot with my Dad at Mosport during an FSAE Shootout.

Some action shots of me throwing down some flyers at Mosport.

https://forums.pelicanparts.com/uplo...1330913914.jpg

And finally, I poured my heart and soul into this one. The aerodynamics was my thesis project and was dynamically adjustable in real time, independantly in all four corners.

Then I graduate, and fastforward a little bit and I have my first house, am engaged to be married this august, am doing my masters part-time, started up my own regional Formula 1200 race team AVR Motorsports, and bought my first 911!

I haven't really done much since I got it. I adjusted the valves without replacing the valve cover gaskets. It's a little bit leaky, and drips right on the exhaust - I had it on the DDT at Mosport and came off and the left heat exchanger was on fire. I put it out with a bottle of water but the engine is out to get cleaned up and resealed so that this doesn't happen again. I will also be doing caliper rebuilds and stainless line upgrade along with new pads and rotors.

Here is a picture with my dad pulling the motor for the first time! Thanks to his coworker Paul and my friend Matt for their hard work in helping to get it out that day... 8 hours, that with me already disconnecting most of everything needing disconnected...

https://forums.pelicanparts.com/uplo...1330914426.jpg

I have more photos to come as I have already seperated the trans, put the engine on the stand, started cleaning and disassembling! Stay tuned and I can't wait for the onslaught of opinions and comments!

Cheers

Ok guys, High Res Pics!...

But here is the engine out on the jack stand with the transmission seperated.

As soon as I get some time back at home I will update these with high-res pics!

Cheers.

Jonathon Rolstin 03-14-2012 05:19 AM

Alright so I promised some pics for the issues I am having... But I will start with a couple of new goodies I got!

A new vice... 5in, 80 bucks at Princess Auto.

https://forums.pelicanparts.com/uplo...1331086120.jpg

A 30 dollar bench grinder (6in) @ PA as well.

https://forums.pelicanparts.com/uplo...1331086170.jpg

Now my troubles... The dizzy connector, has anyone had this happen before? Ideas?

https://forums.pelicanparts.com/uplo...1331086237.jpg

I got a PM from a fellow Ontarian, Arthur, who said the drain plug was definitely 17mm - So I test fit it again... seemed ok...

https://forums.pelicanparts.com/uplo...1331086293.jpg

And out it came! The trans seems totally over-filled. I pulled the plug and it practically poured out from the top of the openning.

https://forums.pelicanparts.com/uplo...1331086375.jpg

Now the oil cooler... Here is the outside that was pried against.

https://forums.pelicanparts.com/uplo...1331086447.jpg

And the collapsed fins / semi-collapsed tube at one end...

https://forums.pelicanparts.com/uplo...1331086518.jpg

Thoughts?

Only had time to snap pics tonight...

Cheers.

Jonathon Rolstin 03-14-2012 05:20 AM

Hey guys, a little bit of an update here.

I took the valve covers off and have a couple of pictures.

https://forums.pelicanparts.com/uplo...1331220547.jpg

and the other side

https://forums.pelicanparts.com/uplo...1331220577.jpg

A have a couple questions here... look at where oil is getting... spark plug area... any ideas where this would be from? Rockers? Or the valve cover gaskets themselves?

Also, I checked torque on the head-studs... I found my loss of compression lol. They were loose, not scary loose, but quite loose. Anyways I am happy I caught it at a safe stage. I know the head studs were all replaced on this car a few thousand miles ago, so they mustn't have been re-torqued.

Next up, I removed, cleaned and resealed the crankcase breather cover, temp sender and pressure sender, oh and the pressure relief valve? The big round guy with the oring :P

https://forums.pelicanparts.com/uplo...1331220736.jpg

Another angle

https://forums.pelicanparts.com/uplo...1331220770.jpg

Pretty much all I could do in 3 hours today... When I removed my breather cover, one of the studs came out, so I cleaned it up, loctited it, and drove it back in. When I was ready to reinstall it I just removed the nut as the loctite had setup enough. I made sure to clean any that got on the mating surface with brake clean.

I also managed to check the torque on all my case perimeter nuts - I am happy to report none of them moved!

Ok so please reply with thoughts on the oil in the spark plug areas on the heads! I want to figure this one out, because I think this was seeping through the cam box mating surface and may be leading me to want to reseal the cam boxes when I really dont want to!

Cheers.

I will start with some close ups of the rocker shafts...

https://forums.pelicanparts.com/uplo...1331300476.jpg

https://forums.pelicanparts.com/uplo...1331300513.jpg

https://forums.pelicanparts.com/uplo...1331300547.jpg

https://forums.pelicanparts.com/uplo...1331300590.jpg

https://forums.pelicanparts.com/uplo...1331300624.jpg

https://forums.pelicanparts.com/uplo...1331300697.jpg

https://forums.pelicanparts.com/uplo...1331300745.jpg

So, rocker shaft seals are definitely on the list. Now the dilemma is, I have been told these can be done without removing the camshaft housings. If that is true, great! Can some people chime in on this? It looks really dirty there and I almost want to pull them off just to give everything a really good cleaning. But also want to be on the road in a few weeks.

Also, some of the rocker shafts seem 'backed out', would this cause valvetrain noise? I am experiencing some on the 1-2-3 bank.

Another post to follow on my crank pulley progress!

Jonathon Rolstin 03-14-2012 05:21 AM

Ok so good progress here, I had a low profile ratchet in my DD car tool kit and got the big plate off.

https://forums.pelicanparts.com/uplo...1331301035.jpg

https://forums.pelicanparts.com/uplo...1331301077.jpg

Dirty

https://forums.pelicanparts.com/uplo...1331301111.jpg

Failed seal!

https://forums.pelicanparts.com/uplo...1331301147.jpg

https://forums.pelicanparts.com/uplo...1331301205.jpg

Cleaned, and pry like this, but be gentle.

https://forums.pelicanparts.com/uplo...1331301272.jpg

And the other cover removed.

https://forums.pelicanparts.com/uplo...1331301310.jpg

Now you are probably asking yourself "what's his dilemma?" Well, I don't have any Curil-T Sealant. What could I use instead? Where can I get it in Canada? Should I install dry, or oiled around outter race? I know to oil the inner race... Can some experts help me out?

Cheers!

Jonathon Rolstin 03-14-2012 05:22 AM

So I was test fitting an allen wrench to start removing rockers... and the #3 shaft just slipped out as I was barely fitting the tool to it... found my valve-train tick... how did this not fail all summer!?!!!! Glad I decided to do this when I did....

https://forums.pelicanparts.com/uplo...1331668480.jpg

Here is a look at the light damage/scoring...

https://forums.pelicanparts.com/uplo...1331668518.jpg

Better view from the other side... :(

https://forums.pelicanparts.com/uplo...1331668542.jpg

#3 assembly...

https://forums.pelicanparts.com/uplo...1331668687.jpg

And my newest edition, 20gal parts washer :), took this shot freehand (tripod in picture) so it's a little blurry...

https://forums.pelicanparts.com/uplo...1331668729.jpg

So... I think I can get away with maybe a new shaft, bushing and hardware, because where it is warn, the shaft was out of adjustment by a few mm. Let me know what you guys think though. Looking for recommendations.

Cheers

Jonathon Rolstin 03-14-2012 05:22 AM

For reference, this is what it looked like before I removed it.

This has been the last couple of weeks for me basically, I have been posting this on Pelican but wanted all my canadian buddies up to speed! I want to come out to the weekly get togethers this summer, but got to get this thing back together first!
