Default The idiots of Kijiji

Jay:
hi, my name is jay. I am a student and I am very desperate to buy a car. I was wondering if you would be interested in financing this car. I am very trust worthy. I'm not trying to rip you off. I'm just desperate and everything seems to be going wrong for me. If you could help me out. I'd be very grateful. Thank you for your time.

Me:
Ok no problem. After you made the last payment, you can pick up the car. Sounds fair?

WTF is up with people these days?

How many people you get offering you 2000$ cash right now, cash in hand pick up tonight. Kijjji is awful for that stuff, you have to filter all the idiots out or you will go crazy.

I agree, idiots on kijiji. I've been trying to sell my in-laws BMW for a few weeks now. In the ad I clearly state no trades and I get trade offers from people. Then I get people who contact me and make ridiculous cash offers, people who ask if the car is still available and never respond etc. I guess that's what you pay for free advertising.

So, all that having been said, where/how should I sell my '04 A4 with only 137k Kim's and S4 brakes?

And no matter how you state it in your ad, the idiot messages keep on flowing. Then there is the, "I work on a ship and would like to buy your car, please send me your info so I can send electronic payment".

But my personal favorite is " I live in Toronto, can you drop off or meet me half way". My answer, you want it come and get it!

Kijiji has a low signal to noise ratio ... that said - my cab sale was via Kijiji and it certainly generated more interest than my ad on Rennlist ... (other than @w00zie that is ...).

So I don't think its appropriate to discount it but definitely be ready for the silliness. If you go in with the right attitude, it can actually be a little fun.

Or a couple of years back I'm selling 17" snow tires and rims off the 05 caddie I owned. Great tires, lots of tread left, rims were perfect and custom painted and 5 coats of clear coat.

I said $400 FIRM - NO HAGGLING. Every single reply wanted them for $200!!!

Then there was the guy who called and wanted me to, "wait two weeks until I get paid".

Then he says, <before I can reply to his first request> "Oh could you cancel the ad as well"?

Um, no.

"But we have a deal"?

No - you can hope they are still for sale in two weeks but if someone comes by tomorrow with cash - they're gone, I reply.

"What?? So this is a race between me and someone else to see who can get you the cash first"?

Basically....

"That sucks"!

Sorry, it's called free enterprise. <click>

Two days later I sold them to some guy with an RX8. I never did hear back from Mr. Living from pay cheque to pay cheque.

Similar experiences here. I had the smart on kijiji, and got only flakes. Some guy in Barrie who told me the whole story about how he was in afghanistan and now had a plate in his head (I actually believed this one...), and a few other things, but generally very few bites. I put it on auto trader and it was sold in a couple days, with two backup buyers who were praying the guys ahead didn't come through.

I've got a van on kijiji now, an 02 windstar. I figure kijiji is a marketplace for people looking for cheap cars. So we'll see if this one sells. If it doesn't, I'm done with kijiji for good. (as a dealer, I have to pay to list - it's only $12, but still, I don't like throwing money away)

Yup got a couple of " can you bring the car to me to see it" ones from the GTA.

And there are the half price offers too. My reply is " Don't you want to see the car before discussing price?"

The car will sell, I'm not worried.

Been on both ends of the Kijiji experience in the past week....

Buying a car and selling a snowmobile.... Accomplished both!!

Once you filter out the noise (reads:BS..) it works nicely.

Hmm I've had some great experiences. I even had a person pay me to deliver it because they were in the city and didn't have a car. Seemed weird at first, but cash in hand is always king.
Yes I do get flakes calling as well..just need to sift through them. It can seem like a huge pain when selling something that you don't care if it sells..another story altogether if you really want something sold. Make the effort match the reward!
