I was as organized as could be and they were absolutely awful. The idiot behind the counter tried to bust my ***** about the price I paid for the car. He said he googled the VIN and found higher prices. I tried to explain to him the difference between asking price and selling price, and that was after I showed him the bill of sale from Manheim, the largest auction in the country. "oh, but google said this". Sure pal, I'm doing a commercial import and I'm going to risk my license, auction access and way to make a living over 6% duty on a $2000 differential. Bloody twit. I think I'd have an easier time reasoning with the Gestapo than with CBSA.

Last October I was running 30 mins late coming over as the US side closes at noon on Fridays, must of caught them on a good day as they processed me and let me continue.

Yea I know what you mean about the Canadian side, as they have their own evaluations on imported vehicles, paying tax on their numbers is a bit of a con as the car your importing could have been gifted or left in a will. Tax you will pay !
The system must of changed over the last few years as my previous import in 07 taxes at the border were paid from purchase receipt.

Ok so the Canadian side will be HST or GST on the bill of sale? I know I will have to pay duty (6.25%) as its a 996 and not made in the US or Canada. On top of that, there will be AC tax, is that $100? My brother brought over his Bentley Turbo R last fall and said it was a PITA on how much they accepted from what form of payment. Do they accept personal cheques? My brothet said they did, he just didn't have any on him. Leaving Monday to tow it home so I will also try calling the Queenston customs to get this but they might be busy.

They accept Visa. That's what I did. I only paid GST. PST I paid when I got my plates at MTO. I imported a vehicle in 2010 before the HST was in effect. I also paid the $100 a/c tax.

GST only at border. PST (they call it Provincial Portion of HST) when you register the car at Service Ontario.

Minor correction to my earlier post

Duty, excise (AC) tax and the GST portion of HST at the border. Prov portion of HST at Service Ontario.

Isn't google great?...
I have brought a few cars over the border. Easier done than said. I usually ship them to a location near Buffalo, then rent a uhaul car hauler for $30 and pick it up early one morning. By the end of the day the car is in my driveway, plates on and insured. Piece of cake really.
So what have you found or still looking for?

So has anyone imported a street legal race car. I'm looking at a 996 with a full cage and no airbags. If I can fit a stock seat belt and steering wheel and make sure the bumpers are still in place I should be fine right?

RIV aka Canadian Tire only cares about the daytime running lights and that the speedo in metric. RIV wants the reacall letter and thats it. Now to pass the safety inspection, I heard that now days, or really soon, they want the ABS and Air Bags to be functional.

Pretty certain that you will need functioning airbags ... (Or at least present ... ) to pass an inspection.

The requirement is that any imported street vehicle meet CMVSS - that's everything from airbags to DRL to child seat tethers to ... You get the point.
