Default importing modded cars

?Any problems importing cars that are modded?

eg. body kits/mild engine work (could probably pass as near stock)/roll cage/gutted interior/2wd conversion etc.

Thanx in advance

No problem as long as it has a VIN and satisfies the US border service. If it's an all out race car and not able to meet DOT then it's even easier. However that all said it comes down to the acceptance by the local jurisdiction in order to license the car.

Also since it's modded, check the car really good to make sure there are no stolen parts with a VIN on it.

How about if airbags have been removed/racing steering wheel? Also found out although it is a my '97, it was biilt sept '96 so qualifies for over 15 years- does that make it easier?

Thanx again

Just a little heads up. You don't need airbags or ABS for safety. 15 years and older make ALL the difference. It doesn't have to go through the RIV. You can brind it in as is and if it pases a safety certification and and e-test, it can be put on the raod without any other modification (daytime runnig lights, seatbelt mods and so on).

yeah it is riv exempt and very easy, no 6.1% duty, they go by the date of manufacture, without inspection at cdn tire afterwords, just at the border. You should only buy it if it is red

The 15 year rule applies from the date on the door panel.

As far as I know this is o nly ture if the car is made in the US or Mexico. At least that's what they told my brother when he brought over an '89 Bentley last month at Fort Eirie. He no choice and had to pay duty at the border.

FWIW, the RIV program and duty are 2 diff things. Bentley was built outside of NAFTA thus is not exempt from the 6.1% duty but the RIV with the recall clearance, dealer inspection, day time running lights, bumper modifications and baby seatbelt anchors is exempt which I assure you would be more than the duty

when I imported my 86 Porsche I did not pay 6.1% duty I just remembered it was because car was 25 years old not because it was riv exempt (sorry I got confused) so on the 96 build car you will poy 6.1%

Now you've got me very curious what you're up to. Will this end up being another 8000HP monster but dedicated for track use?

Cheers,

You got lucky. REALLY lucky. 6.1% duty applies to anything (not just cars) imported into Canada that wasn't manufactured in Canada, the US or Mexico. Any Porsche coming into Canada should be hit with duty, whether it was made 6 months ago or was the very first 356 ever built.

Occasionally I get an order of parts duty-free, I guess because they don't check where it was made, just assume car parts from the US are made in the US. When I imported the 83 944 I got hit with duty. Same with the 86 911.

Cheers,
Well, not 800hp but probably little lighter than mine and 2wd ... there's been a couple of gt-2 type conversions come up on the 993 turbo board. Check them out.

Sounds like if it is > 15 years, it is easier to import, so good. The hard part is getting the nod from the wifey which I'm still working on ...
