Post 993 or 964

Hi,

Finally, I am in the market for a well kept 993 or 964. My preference is a 95 or 96 but am open to the right car.

I hope there is a Rennlister who wants/needs to know it will be going to a good home.

It will be my first Porsche - and as many of you know- this car is NOT about impressing the neighbors- it's about loving the car of my dreams.

I have no problem traveling anywhere in this great country. I hope to have it by the end of the month, so wish me luck.

Cheers,
Thom

Best of luck in the search. They seem rare these days so I hope you are lucky. Both are great cars but the 993 is more modern and a little less pure to some. Much better rear suspension and more power in the later engines. Enjoy whatever you get!

I have owned them both and found them to be equally enjoyable cars to own + drive. Buy the best car you can within your budget, and enjoy the search.

964 represents a great value proposition. I couldn't and still can't justify the price premium for a 993. Certainly not for a C2 or C4. For $10k - $15k less than 993 prices, you can get a very good 964. That buys a lot of mods/repairs.

993 C4S or C2S or Turbo is a different story, but even then, you can get a decent 997 for the same money.

Boils down to preference and your budget. A cheap 911 is the most expensive car you can buy. Always get a PPI and buy the best car you can afford.

Good luck.

I love my 964 for the classic look. Personal preference, I looked at a 993 and 964 and decided that the upright lights were more to my liking. Nothing against the 993, just prefer one over the other. I'm sure you do as well.

Grab one of Onami's cars. No, realy. Do it. You'll not likely find better examples for what he wants around.

I agree with cliff. The 964 is an exceptional value. They're easy to find, especially in the states, and fairly easy to diy. I do think the 993 is a better looking car, and of course more powerful, but it's also twice the price.

Agree. 993 is pricy comparing to a 964. but hard to find 964 in low millage.
i end up picking up a 997 instead of a 993 because i'll be 'afraid' of driving the 993 much and looses it's value.
To me a 964 or 997, i would expect normal depreciation and would feel more comfortable putting miles on.

Pick up a 964 in the states for around 16-17k with around 100k miles, and I can't see that car depreciating much more, assuming proper care. In 10 years at 200k miles, I can't see that selling for really any less than today's equivalent of $15k.

Thanks to everyone for all the great comments and advice. Looks like I'm going the 964 route, as while the search continued, i accepted a transfer from Calgary and the new house is an old house with a garage built just before WWll. There goes 20k of the budget...

My search continues and when all is done, lots of photos and a standing invitation to one and All to come on over and drive, talk Pcar....cold canned beverages...
