To the OP: I have been asked by my neighbor, if I change my cars because the ashtray gets full. I responded that I change cars cause they start running out of gas. We both had a good laugh. But I always wondered what prompted her to say that. Jealousy, maybe? In your situation, the neighbors' comment seems "innocent". I agree with others, just take him up on that request one day.
