Default UPDATE

Hey everyone,

I just called GPK to find out what the best way is for us to race so that a) we don't have to wait in queue for a race, and b) so that we don't have random people racing with us.

They have an event "package" called the mini grand prix, which would mean we have the track for our group and it includes 14 laps qualifying per person and a 16 lap race at whatever speed level we choose. Minimum of 10 people she said and $49/person. http://www.gpkartways.com/small_corporate_events.html

However, I was looking on their website and this doesn't seem to be that great of a deal, except for ensuring that you race with your group. They have daily specials, including the following:

Thursdays: $16 for 16 laps (so for our $50 we would get 3 races...)
Fri - Sun: $21.24 for 1 race or $38.05 for 2 races

Downsides to regular racing are that we don't get track exclusivity and we can't reserve a time, it's first come first serve. Also, I dont think we get to choose the speed setting of the karts. Having said that, they have a bar/cafe/arcade/slot cars so there's stuff to do while we wait, and I'm sure we could show up and request that they slot the group of us into the next free race time.

Additionally, anybody that hasn't raced there before is required to purchase a "basic license":

Basic License $8.85
As a minimum, all drivers must register for an official GPK license before their first race. The fee includes a license card, balaclava, 1-year registration, and online racing results. This fee is included in either of the above memberships.
So, what do you all think? I'm thinking Thursday night... likely less busy than friday/saturday and we can get 3 races for $48 (+tax)... or more if we choose to.

Jon, while some nights seem to be cheaper per race, keep in mind that a regular race is based on a "best lap time", does not give you grid start and most importainly, no top speed setting. I've raced both speeds there, and while speed 1 (fastest) only shaves less than a second per lap, it is more challenging, requires a lot more braking and feels way faster on the straight and out of the corners. Since this most likely will be a one time thing, I don't mind spending an extra $10 to get the most out of it. Whatever the group prefers, I am absolutely and definitely in.

Stan, you make a very good point, I completely agree the extra $10 would definitely be worth having proper racing and speed 1.

Thursday Feb 10, mini grand prix:

Jon + possibly 2 friends
Stan

Who else can confirm for thursday? Once we have 10 I'll call GPK and book it.

What time on Thursday, I work downtown on Thursday so an early start time may rule me out.

I think you should be alright, I live downtown and my friend won't be home (downtown) from work until 6ish, and I plan on getting a ride with him!

I'm thinking we should plan for 8pm at GPK? How does this work for everyone? If we get 10 confirmed by tomorrow I'll call and reserve it for us. Otherwise we'll just show up and have fun!

Ok, I guess tomorrow is a bit short notice! Let's say Thursday Feb 17, 8pm and judging on the amount of interest by early next week I'll call them and book the event.

I may still go tomorrow night for some general racing if my 2 friends are still interested, and will post on the forum tomorrow if this is happening and you are all encouraged to come join us!

Me and the wife go there most sundays. It's usually not that busy. We get the unlimited pass and most of the time we go on and off whenever we feel like it. Once the date is secured I'll see if I can get the night off work. Would love to come out for some fun.

Christien, I guess that's a good excuse! Have a great time.

mister_2, would be fantastic if you could make it out next week, bring the wife!

Jim, great to hear you'll be there!

Stan, turns out I'm not going to go tonight as both my friends can't make it anymore (they leave tomorrow morning for Utah to do some ski/snowboarding!). I hope you can make it next Thursday. Also, I have a ton of pictures from Hershey last year that I need to give to you so I'll plan to bring them to GPK. Here's a teaser (Chris liked this one and edited the colours a bit... I think he did a good job!):
