Default Buying a car from private seller in california - steps?

I've done the buying thing from dealers and auctions on the other end of the border, but would like some advice on how to buy a car in californiyay without wiring the guy a bunch of money and having him walk off with it.

How do you guys usually do it? Escrow?

Do you plan to look at it yourself ?- or see if a Rennlister on the left coast will look and report back to you - seems to be done quite a bit here and on pp

Speak to the guy - see if he can send pics - or video, as much as you can get. If car looks like what you want then agree on PPI and contact that shop and see if they will send pics or video along with a report. for a comparison

make arrangements for payment and or pick-up - wha laa

that is kind of what I did with my latest 911. ah the wonders of the Internet

What are you looking at - older (911) or a newer one (997) ?

Brad

Oh ya - I should add ... you pick the shop etc. If guy is serious then he will work to sell - if scammer then - you will tell

won't have a chance to look at it myself. my cousin lives in LA so i might be able to send him to look at the car. the guy has provided very detailed photos and a compression test across all rotors showing that the motor is strong. I'm satisfied that the car is represented accuratly. the guy is also on the main forum for the brand.

should i use an escrow? do you know if TFX will let me pay them for the car and they cut the cheque to the owner when they pick it up?

is the seller known on the RX-7 board? If he is, check his background. Also have him take it in for emission testing with your cousin, that should tell you what shape that rotaty is in

nice car, some here altho, most prefer (as do i ) the turbo'd supras & skylines cause of their exceptional dependability. see them in ever increasing numbers here as with the 15 yr old rule and their low cost in japan a number of brokers are bringing them over.

^raspberry,

i hear u on the RHD's. J.Daniels on rennlist had a pair of the first skylines ever legally allowed in. Those were good times

Long story short, i bought the car. deposit sent in.
Goign to have him e-mail me the ownership, notify the border crossing and then wire the $$ over i suppose, or send someone down to pick it up for me.

WAHOOOOOOOOOO!
