Default License Plate for Import??

Hi all,

I need a quick answer about what I need when I import my 964 this Friday as far as a license plate goes. Does the car need US plates? Or a US temp plates or CAN temp plate. Anyone have an idea? Been searching for details. Picking the car up in Niagara and crossing the boarder at Lewistion. Export is all setup, but not sure about plates.

Thanks

Will you be driving the car or will it be on a trailer?

You can get a 10-day trip permit from the MTO. You'll need insurance and a bill of sale. Can't remember the cost, but it's not too bad. Though I think it's different now - I think they use temp plates now, instead of a sticker in the windshield, so maybe it's all changed.

Ask the seller (particularly if it's a dealer) to get you a temp permit from their state. Some states are very easy and cheap (CA comes to mind).

You can drive with either, perfectly legally, so long as you have a bill of sale indicating you bought the car. I think it's 10 days or something before you have to register it in Ontario.

The border people aren't going to care so much, but I'm sure they'll phone their friends in the OPP if you're crossing with no plates.

The MTO would not issue me a temp. plate/sticker until the ownereship was issued for Ontario. It didn't make sense to me. Two offices told me the same thing. Luckily for me I used the temp. North Carolina tag that came with the vehicle.
What you could do is ask the seller if they can get you a temp. permit for the State the vehicle is coming from. All they need is proof of insurance. It cost me under $50.

Thanks. I bought from a private and the car was being picked up today, so no chance of having the temp on the US side. Will go to the MTO with my insurance and bill of sale and see what they can do. Hopefully it won't be an issue. Very excited to drive her home (black 964).

There is a get together of wrenching on the 964's this weekend in Ancaster. I think there are 10 plus 964's going to hang. I may possibly be going as well, weather permitting and car permitting (fingers crossed to finally have it back home for good)....lol

I have imported 2 cars on my own from two different states within the last 3 years. Sorry but I am sure that you are S...O....L..... The MTO WILL NOT issue a temp plate for a car that you are importing until you have have a FORM1 which you can only get from the Canada Customs at the time of import - classic Catch 22 Scenario. I know because I went through this myself 3 years ago when I imported my 911 from Rhode Island. Your best option is to have the owner lend you his plates for the drive back. That's was what I did when I imported my 951 from Michigan this year. Good Luck!!

When I drove my car through, the paper work at the border covers you for 45 days I think. Not sure, but it is a long time. You dont even need plates as long as you have the paper work with you. I remember an OPP know running after me into the post office, and giving me a big lecture. He left feeling like an idiot after understanding that he was not fully up to speed on the law.

Now, this was 3 years ago, but just check with MTO.

Best bet is a temp permit from the state it come from. May see if the buyer can get it for you and fedex it.
Ontario requires original purchase and sale, proof of insurance and Form 1 (RIV).
I had the same run around with the MTO. I said f-it and simply took the plates from my old car (still valid, but he car was sold) and affixed them to the car for the drive back. Not exactly legal, but had all the paper work and insurance with me and I kept it within the speeding limit on the drive home so nobody had any reason to pull me over and ask any questions.

Thanks guys, looks like it is a "Catch 22". The MTO requires the form-1 before they will issue a temp, weird. I have the seller overnighting his old plates from the car which will get me to the MTO where I can have the car properly registered. I should have had him get me a temp permit from his state, hind sight is 20/20 - live and learn.

Jeff - Thanks for the info on the 964 get together, not sure this weekend will work but definitely looking forward to coming out to the evening meets and get together's in the future. Will post pics once she arrives, cannot wait!!

I hate to say I told you so..... The feds at Detroit gave me a hard time when I imported my 951. They didn't believe the purchase price on my bill of sale. They made me stew in my car for 45min while they searched craiglist, kijiji, and autotrader for comparable prices. In the end they let me go. Just be reasonable on the declaration price or they might make your life even more miserable than they made mine. Good luck with the import.

Hello, I imported my 911 last Aug. A quick call to my insurance company before I left and I took a plate off another of my cars. Put it on in Denver and drove back to Calgary a few days later, no issues anywhere. Piece of cake....
No forms, no problems no delays.....

Rod,

Sounds like you're going to pick the car up yourself...depending on the state, its pretty easy to drop into their DMV and have a temp tag issued with a transferred title. That's what I did in Ohio...cost all of 10 bucks and it was dead simple. At that time (3 years ago) Ohio was issuing a cardboard 'plate' with a 30-day expiry.

Good luck and congrats on the new purchase!

Ps. If you're thinking of affixing plates from another car, be sure that you're aware of the risks involved...not sure what the consequences are of being caught (car towed?) but you don't need to be speeding or doing anything illegal for the police to run your plate. Then you could be in a jam.

I ran into this problem when I bought my 944. They didn't believe you could buy a Porsche for $1700. I showed the the classified thread on Pelican Parts where the price was stated, pictures matched, (couldn't mistake it, looked like it had been painted with a brush!) and they accepted that.

Be careful swapping a plate from your other car - if you get pulled over you could be in serious trouble!
