Any suggestions for best oil choice. I just plan on taking it for a 1 hr run every other week in the winter and use the car in the summer. This would be a first oil change and have seen 15-50, 10-30 non synthetic on the form.

Castrol seems to be a popular choice.

I've heard that with sythentic may be more prone to leaks.

Mobil 1. But I drive all year round. Brad Penn is popular for our cars too. Just a little less easy to find. BTW, have you posted pics of your car here yet?

0-40 in an air cooled Porsche ? not for me .. no way no how.. I run 20w50 Brad Penn in the summer and Brad Penn 15w40 in the cooler months. Not sure how much the 964 difers from the Carrera/ SC cars though . You want something with high ZDDP to prevent pitting on the cams and rockers. The newer oils are depleted of this due to the fact they harm cats .. The discusions on this could go on for pages and pages .. in fact it has gone on for years ... can't really go wrong with

If you have not changed your oil before and are going to do it for the first tome make sure you ask on your model board . .lots of people massively overfill the first time because they didn't empty the crankcase and the tank ..

I have had 2 964's and only use synthetic. Mobil 1 5w or 10w 50. My car is only used in summer months. Never any leaks. Bone dry. if your seals are getting old and leaking, its time to change them out.

You should use what the last PO used in the car. I have been told that seals react differently especially if you try to go from a non synthetic to a synthetic you are asking for trouble.

When I purchased my 964 8 years ago it had a 0-40 Mobil sticker in the engine bay and it was serviced by a Porsche Dealer from new. Maybe they were trying to kill the engine for higher profits.
I change the oil every year before winter, and my consumption is very low for a 964. I used a litre for + 5-6k km with normal summer driving and double that with track or hard useage. I have done changes with Royal Purple 20-50 & Total products. Same consumption. I even keep a bottle of GM's ZDDP additive around (can't remember the name) and throw in a few drops every oil change. I think my engine likes the Mobil 0-40 best so I don't see any need change. I am no oil expert but if it's not broken why change. I buy the Mobil 0-40 Euro bulk and use it in most of my cars and can't see paying almost twice as much for Royal, Total or what ever.

I think the key is change your oil annually

I get my brad penn in the US and have guys deliver it occasionally .. I think last time I payed about 50.00 for 12 quart bottles . There may be some significant differences in engine design to the 964 especially if it were put in from new .. I imagine the bearing clearances are different .. but if you aren't seeing consumption then your not wearing .. outstanding ..

That's a good price. I wish I could get the Royal Purple for that price. I think I paid $8-9 a quart for last time. I pay $4.25 a liter now for the Mobil 1 0-40. I have to buy a minimum of 8 cases (4 ltre/case) to get that price. Now that I sold my Passat I don't need as much 0-40 oil annually. I may have to look at some other source soon.

Yeah Royal Purple is more of a motorcyle app and they tend to be premium price cause they take less// gotta make there money .. you should look to just doa group buy of oil with some other owners .. lots of guys in Ottawa..

I just had the oil changed over at http://www.keltechperformance.com and recommended was LIQUI MOLY - LUBRO MOLY Synthoil Premium 5 W-40 (purple jug) + Mahle oil filter. Did the fuel filter also.

20w50 dino oil. I change it out every year before she goes into hibernation....typically does 3k KM a year.

I usually take the car out during the winter, run up to normal temp. This should be ok since the garage never gets below 5 degrees.
