Default Driving Toronto to Mntrl for F1 - Stuck going 401?

Going on Friday and obviously going 401 is the most direct but most boring. Looks like you could go Hwy 7 to Peterborough (via 35/115) or up to 7 at Cobourg (via 45 hooking in to 7 at Norwood). Then take 7 all the way to Perth and then drop onto #43 which goes through Smith Falls and then allllll the way to #34 at Alexandria which drops down to the 401 near the QC border.

Anyone tried this or have an estimate of how long this would take vs the direct route at around 5 hours. Not sure the wife will go for it but almost anything is better than the 401 if the weather is good and the top is down.

Thanks

I would estimate twice as long as the 401. Comapred to the side roads, you can really fly on the 401. I'm taking the 401 and laving at 6:15 Friday morning with 4 other buddies.

Hi..I'm heading down also on Friday. What time you going? I figure to leave around mid-day (by 1pm), shouldn't be too bad at that point. Forecast looks pretty wet on wknd, but I've learned not to trust the Monday forecast.

It depends on the route, weather but more importantly, when my wife can finish up business. As I mentioned above, I would really like to avoid the 401 and put the top down but not sure I can afford an 8-10 hour drive (nor do I think my wife could stand it!!) if I stay off the 401. All things being equal would probably leave mid morning to avoid any rush hour in Montreal

Where you leaving from?

I'm heading up on Thursday, but not in the p-car. 401 is boring, but direct. On 7 you end up getting stuck in traffic and slowing through every little town. The weather forecast that I saw looks good, maybe rain on Sunday, which could make the race more interesting.

Yes the weather looks pretty good but as one of the other guys said, never trust a Monday forecast for the weekend. Also looks like the 401 is inevitable - if i was going by myself then I would do #7 but likely not this time......

6PM in Montreal is still part of the afternoon rush. Add that to majoroty of the GP fans getting into Montreal at that time and you might want to re consider leaving a bit earlier.

Driven from London to Montreal three times for the F1, and had no real problems with the 401.

I'd just highly recommend watching your speed when you hit the border... seemed to ALWAYS be tons of speed traps right around there.

There will definitely be speedtraps, expecially around Belleville and Kingston. I have driven to the F1 a lot and there is probably no alternative but to cruise down. I usually leave very early so as to avoid the crush. The way back is sometimes worse as it takes forever to get off the island. I never drive a Porsche down..its not a fun drive.

Well I am taking my 96 cab for sure _ i'd rather be driving that than anything else i have!! Going Friday with the top down and I am looking forward to it. I will leave early and am in no rush. We are not coming back till Mon so dont have to worry about the return traffic as much

5hrs in a convertible on the 401? You'll be worn out before you get there. I know I would be.

Is there any better way to get worn out?? (other than the obvious...)

Its just a bit of wind and I have a deflector. I honestly dont know why people think it is "tiring" to drive long distances with the top down and the sun out. Its not like I have to be wrestling with the car. Way better than the top up and raining (or the top up and anything.....)

What better way to do it?? Have fun guys however you get there and we'll wave if we see anyone in a p-car. I've got the black 96 cab with a blonde in the passenger seat (with the hair flying!!)

We'll be the four cheap ba$tards in the Pontiac Vibe! Leaving Mississauga at 6:15am. If we run into traffic and need to detour, I'll post it here.

Have fun and stay safe!
