Hey Guys:
If you thought the duties were excessive when bringing one of our cars over the US border, think again. I ordered a car cover from Belgium and was more than a little surprised to see 18% in duty plus GST plus PST plus a $10.00 processing fee. YEEEEEEEEEEEEKS! I thought I would give you a heads up. Apparently any product manufactured outside of a country governed by NAFTA is subject to the 18% duty. I think I will investigate the rates for a European pickup and wait to get my goods when I am on vacation in the summer next time.

Something there is a bit fishy. If you buy a car from usa built in usa you only pay pst and gst no duty. But when the car is manifactured outside of USA ie. Europe is when the 6.1% duty is applicable, Unless I'm missing something here and Ive been importing car from the USA since 2001. Unless direct shipment is different which I dont understand why it would be

well Fedex checked out the applicable duties for me and it most certainly is 18% duty plus 13% Canadian taxes on these items. The cover I purchased was manufactured in Italy and sold through a retailer in Belgium.

It is 18%. Car cover will probably be classified as tariff code 63.04, 63.06 or 63.07 and have a duty of 18%. Nearly all fabric product are classified under the same category all with 18% duties.
The 6.1% duty that import none North America cars you pay is because cars are classified under tariff code 87.03 "Motor cars and other motor vehicles principally designed for the transport of persons (other than those of heading 87.02), including station wagons and racing cars." They are totally different classification of goods.
You can easily download the tariff code and percentage database from CBSA so you know what your duty rate is ahead of time and also know when you are entitled to a refund when CBSA makes mistake in classifying the items.

Bergamasco,
Duty charges, especially by the FedEx's ans UPS's of the world are angering.
However, I suppose you purchased a car cover from Carnewal and the extra dough you spent will soon be forgotten. You;ll never regret quality goods in the long run.

Hey Dan: No, I didn't go for the red but went for the Ferrari yellow instead. I am going to give the car a wash over the weekend and try it on. As soon as I can get a photo I will post one. We do need to organize a GTG for the 993TTs. I have given some thought to organizing a sunrise cruise again as I did last year. The route we used last year is very scenic and there is a nice stop at an Italian coffee bar before heading back to the start.

Yes, I agree that in the long run the price is forgotten. I did appreciate the service from Gert. I will try and do business from him again but will look to see if I can save money by picking up my purchase in Europe.
