Default Shipping Engine to the U.S

Has anyone shipped their engine to the U.S for work/upgrades? I'm thinking about having my 91 965 Turbo converted to EFI.

Are there taxes or duties to worry about when bringing it back ?

Thx.

Tim

Yes, GST & PST on all parts and labour. Duties only if they list the parts as German...

Well now you have - remember that name! If you're curious and have time to kill, search them on pelican and read all the horror stories.

"Motormeister will screw you and then screw you again if they can. My engine was shipped in September and returned to me in February with the valves needing adjusting, cracked distributor cap and a bad rear main seal. Never again will I use them again."

Check with the CRA and Canada Customs, because you may get charged tax based on the value of the repaired/rebuilt motor and not the cost of the repair.
I battled with the CRA over an electronic ABS module that I removed from my car and shipped to the States to be repaired. The service cost $250.00 but the replacement cost would have been ~$1,000.00. CRA declared the value of my now repaired part to be equal to a new part at $1000.00 and charged me accordingly. After many phone conversations and faxes I gave up the fight to have the taxes reduced to amount due on a $250.00 service.

There was a tax "specialist" on the news that stated if you take your car to the States to have work performed (He used the example of a paint job) you are responsible for the tax and duties for the full value of the car when you return to Canada. This does not sound like it could be right but he was insisting that is the way the CRA will see the matter.

My advice would be to get info directly from them (CRA) or arrange a tax "friendly" way to bring the motor back into Canada.

Wow, tax and duties on the full car because of a paint job?

I shipped my speedometer to North Hollywood Speedo for repair and don't remember any charges from the gov't on its return. $200 repair bill, iirc.

I hope I'm my info is wrong, it was from a "Tax Expert" on the local news.

Christian I will say that in the past it has been hit or miss of what shipments I receive get taxed and i do feel that in this case on the part I sent to the US for repair, I should not have been taxed but I ended up giving up the fight to have the money returned as dealing with the CRA is a painful drawn out process that that can take months to resolve and in the end wasn't worth my time for the amount of $ involved.

For the OP I would still recommend getting some factual info from Customs/CRA as the amount of money involved could be much higher than what I was dealing with.

I've noticed the same thing - sometimes nothing, sometimes PST/GST, sometimes duty. Pelican luckily doesn't mark shipments as being import parts, so duty is rare. I think I got dinged for it only once.

Your odds are better than mine I'm 50/50 on the tax hit when I order from Pelican.
My boxes come tagged as Vintage Car parts or something similar. (i can't find an old box to check which)

I had the power control modules re-flashed by a guy in the States. i took the unit to the customs office before going across and got a blue slip that described the thing ( serial #). After tuning I showed the blue slip and paid gst/rst on the cost of the tuning only ( paypal receipt).
