Default Cdn Tire: Float chargers are on sale

This week at CT., for those of us that store our cars for the winter.....

I have an old one, with just the ring and clamp terminals.

I bought a 2nd one to use on my Boxster.... intrigued by the cigarette lighter adapter connection. My Boxster has an "always on" 12V lighter plug, so I think I'm going to use it to maintain the battery for a few months.

I just bought one of these, there were 2 on sale one was a 2 amp maintainer (on sale for $20 reg $35), the other was pretty much the same and it also had a 4 amp setting (on sale for $35 reg $55).

One question I have is, if I use the cig adapter to connect to maintain the battery is there any risk in damaging the electical components to the car or is it recommended to disconnect and remove the battery from the car and maintain it in the basement?

The Porsche charger/maintainer (which is similar to a CTEK unit) comes with a cigarette lighter adapter. SOP for maintaining a p-car.

I don't think it will cause any problems.... I believe the battery acts as a sink and will absorb any fluctuations in charge from the tender.

Anyways, your alternator puts out a lot more amp. than these chargers.

Trickle and float chargers with cigarette lighter adapters are designed for this . Even if your battery was dead as a door nail the trickle charger would only put out so much which is well within the specs of the cigarette lighter circuit and wiring.
The ONLY thing I would worry about ( and that is really minimal ) would be the corrosive gasses given out by a charging battery with the battery in an enclosed space. But as I said it would be really minimal, especially on a fully charged battery you are just maintaining . I keep my front lid cracked for some air flow just because it makes me feel better , no other real scientific reason..

I've always used the cigarette lighter receptacle. No issues, no problems.

Also keep my 2A trickle charger on a 24hr timer, that's on 2 hrs every 12 hrs.

Stays this way until late March.......

be sure that the ventiliation tube (on the 993) is connected so the battery can breathe.

Do that on a modern Porsche and you are actually drawing more current than if you keep it closed, locked and armed.
