I don't know you, but a fellow Rennlister here (me) has just reported that scum as a scammer/fraud...gotta stick it to morons like that.

A bank draft (cheque directly from the bank) works this way. Gotta watch for forgeries though. Easy to check by calling the issuing branch and ensuring they issued X draft (they have serial numbers) for X dollars and to who.

A certified cheque does not work this way. Guys were making their own stamps so years ago we stopped taking them.

Wire transfer is the most secure and impossible to retract. Easy to check too as all you have to do is log in to online banking to verify. No need for a special bank account, your bank account number is on every cheque you write. It's not exactly top secret.

I paid for my GT3 this way. From Royal Bank to a bank in Chicago ... took 15 min. Easy as pie.

After wire transfer every type of payment - cash, cheque, cert cheque, bank draft, credit cards etc. - all have different problems associated with them.

Cash - forgeries, get mugged by buyer's buddy or other person while carrying big wad

Cheque - bum cheques, stolen cheques, takes up to 20 business days to clear

Cert Cheque - bum cheque, closed account, guy made own stamp, takes up to 20 business days to clear

Bank Draft - forged amount, forged payee

Credit Cards - Stolen Cards, Fake Cards

You just gotta do your due diligence and ensure method of payment is genuine.

Well guys,

Thanks for the words of encouragement. I have finally got home from work, and have put together the e-mails I received on this matter.

As I wrote, this ***** bag is looking to buy a Porsche, so this is to show you what kind of nuts there are out there, and watch out for this guy in particular.

My narration is in black bold.
The nut job is highlighted in red. He is the extratexture@XX.ca addy
My responses are in black.
The buyer who walked is in blue.

BTW, here is the link to my car on craigslist Toronto…

My 1988 928S4 add

This is the first e-mail I got from the nut…

How can you verify the mileage?

this message was remailed to you via: sale-ngvxq-1253902807@craigslist.org

He called me at 8:26 am on the 5th. I answered his questions on the car. He seemed like an OK fellow, and wanted to come see the car. I told him that I was leaving town with work in a few hours, and we could put a meeting together at the next soonest time. So I sent him off an e-mail with the dates I could show the car, and directions on how to get to my house.

The buyer and his son show up in the morning of the 7th. He, and his son go through the car with me, test drive it, and he wants to buy it. He gives me a $1k deposit on it. He asks that I don’t show the car anymore. I agree, because he has given a deposit. I think the car is sold.

Again I told you we could come out the DAY it was posted and would buy it on
the spot and you said no it was impossible for you. This is NO WAY to
conduct business and I will post warnings about you and this car everywhere
you have it listed.
This is a scummy way to do business and shows a complete
lack of character.

My S4 has been for sale for "2 or 3 weeks" at this point, and this nut was given the same dates to come see the car as the buyer. This also begs the question, if he wanted to buy the car on the spot, why then should eveyone else now be warned off the car? Why is the car now not to be purchased?

Now this is where it goes off the rails. ***** bag now puts craigslists add up on the internet warning people that I am dishonest, and I can’t prove the mileage. He also uses my name in the ad, and writes not to trust me, etc…

I feel I must tell the buyer that the ***** bag is making the slanderous posts. The buyer seems like a good guy, and I want to be honest with him. I think that if he saw these posts he would be very concerned (I guess I was right). I know I could have not done this, but i believe in honesty.

Again, I am sorry for these unavoidable circumstances which are personal and will not be divulged. You will have to find another buyer for the vehicle. Sincerely, <BUYER>

And here I am now.

I have decided to give back the “would be” buyer his deposit. I don’t like that he has not tried to see, or at least look for the truth here, but I would not feel right keeping his money. He can come out and pick it up himself though. I will not be giving it to someone other then him, mailing it, or sending a bank transfer etc.

I guess sometimes you just get it in the *** wether you deserve it or not.

THIS JERK IS STILL OUT THERE TRYING TO STOP ME FROM SELLING MY CAR FOR PURE SPORT.

I have a few calls on the car while I was gone, and also a couple of e-mails. One of which asks specifically What’s with the warning”s”.

What a disapointment!

Once again guys, I thank you for looking for this guys Craigslist, and Kijiji posts, and reporting/flagging them.

I will have to keep checking.

If someone finds another, could they please send the nut job a word or two before flagging them.

Chris, very good info on types of payment.

It is good to see that there is a definite community here!

Cosmo, I will give you a call tomorrow if I can. I purchased the old Porsche Dealership signs from Saskatoon, and I would love you to see them. The Porsche crests (2 of them) are huge 6 foot by 6 plexiglass panels that will look amazing light up on my garage walls. They should arrive by truck next week.

Hey Mike,
Selling cars is ..... well, 'selling cars' - bizzare stuff happens: sadly, you've had more than an average quota already on this magnificent S4 that you have lavished many hours and $$$ to restore to its current level.
The price is more than fair, so it will sell .....

There is only supposition to link the retraction of offer to the nutjobs rantings - and it doesn't really matter anyway: the guy just wants out, despite having seen and driven the car. One would assume that he does have truly compelling personal issues to force withdrawal. As you have decided to refund all or part of the deposit, do so in person .... with the S4 sitting in your driveway. You never know what will transpire. He might even write the big cheque ...

As to the nut job, not much to do but ignore it and let it go away. It would have to turn into a major deal to be worth the cost & time to contest legally, say for slander. As far as lost opportunity, tough to prove .... for as you have experienced, many who call to view never show up anyway - that's the car selling biz.

I am sorry to hear of this unfortunate situation. that guy is a freak.
did you write up a bill of sale or contract? and you never got his phone number?
these are things that should be done when taking a deposit.
regarding wires or money draft or certified cheque, all can come back nsf even 30 days later, the Nigerians have perfected this. and even if you took out the money first your bank would come after you.
unfortunately there really is no great way to transfer funds guaranteed nowadays. it is best to check out the other party and know who you are dealing with. when I bought my tt I realized that if one wanted to pull a scam it is easy to do by selling a high end desirable car. btw what was the selling price?

Again, sorry to hear that this happened Mike. I actually put an ad up on Kijiji for the day yesterday to help counteract this guy for you saying that you were legit and so is the car. You are a good guy to return the deposit!

I will have to stop in for a beer and check out those signs. I am in the middle of doing my shocks right now, pretty big job. I should have the car back on the road this weekend.

Selling used porsches is a pain. I sold a cheap ratty 944 on ebay last year and had no end of flakes, even the final buyer who wanted me to pay for transmission replacement AFTER he drove it 600km home to cleveland, and a full month after the sale was completed.

Any time I do it again, all terms will be spelled out in full detail in the for sale ad, right up front.

Lesson learned, hingsight is 20/20, etc etc. It's a crappy position to be in, no doubt. Good luck.

Oh, and no way would I bother spending any time or money on the craigslist guy. Good money after bad and all...

Cosmo, I'll have a cold one ready for you.

Dan, it is $15.5 o.b.o.

Garth, I don't think I would run into characters like this out east. How is my 993 engine doing?

On the lighter side, a big crate arrived today. The panels (one still in crate) are 6'x6'

I have only 2 things to say on this matter ....
1. Money Talks Bull**** walks, to bad the buyer didn't relaize this he could have netted himself a nice car , glad to see you refunded his deposit , all is not lost and he may buy it eventually.
2. Holy crap there ia ANOTHER porsche in cambridge, if we actually organised we actually have enough guys for a cruise or a get together at the timmies on Franklin.
