Default Vinyl, Translucent Tail Light Film: GTA Source?

As with all older cars, the tail lights tend to discolour/fade with age. The 964 lights fade to a lovely pinkish hue after a few years in the sun. There is no point replacing the lenses wih new ones because they play the same trick. Bit of a Porsche defect.

The only real cost effective alternative is to apply a tinted vinyl film across the exterior of the lenses. Its similar to car graphic film except that it's translucent and allows light to filter through. I may only get a few years out of a single application since I drive the car all year round. But it's cheaper than new OE tails.

There are a few vendors on flea bay but I'd rather buy local and save the f/x, duty hassle.

Anyone come across this kind of product in their travels?

Thanks,

Cliff

Cliff there is a spray that works way better. It's called night shade sold at crappy tire. I've used it on Honda plastic and it was trouble free for 3 years. You just need to be very patient applying it and let each coat dry.

Thanks Al - I should have been more clear in saying that I wanted to tint the lenses red, rather than black - my reading of the Nightshade product is that it will black out the lenses, correct?

Thanks Zook, I'll check out the site.

The night shade actually tints the lense with a thin coating. A few more coatings makes them black.

Default Here's a suggestion...

Call Mike from Michelangelos body shop 416-371-2067. He will etch your plastic lenses and then respray them professionally to whatever tint you want. The other stuff flakes off. It looks factory when done right.

Cliff - in the same boat as you (good company!)

Let us know the solution you try. I'm sure the whole 964 (and 993 and 3.2?) crew want to know!

Also - I'm ordering clear bulb/orange filemant bulbs for my clear sidemarkers. Want some?

RK

I am interested in a Canadian source for a tail light make over kit. I like the paint option. I was thinking of using transparent model paint and spray painting the tail lights.
I think it may hold up better over the long haul.

Let me know what you find and how I can join in. Thanks

Cheers
Walton

A 12" X 15 foot roll of 12mil RED is enough to do several 964's, eh?

http://www.lamin-x.com/12-x-15-Roll-...ilm-p/1215.htm

Should we order a roll?

There is a current thread on the 964 Forum about this now (Thread Title "Rear reflector/tailight tint: testimonial"). I know you are looking for a Canadian source but I'm not sure you will beat the $45.00 US with many testimonials for the tinted vinyl film kit. We could possibly get a few of us GTA 964 guys to go together and place a single order and save on shipping costs?
Apparently it is a time consuming project but the end result deep red tint looks great in the pictures.

I've tried to contact Gus a few times since April to get a kit. he was asking $50USD back then. I know it's proven so I'm happy to go with him. I just haven't had a response from him in a while.

Instead of the usual "engine drop party" we should have a "964 Tail Light Tint Fest". I've got the room and the tools and would gladly volunteer my place in the green hills of Ancaster.

I'm also going to combine the tint job with the 5 Light Brake Mod that Ilko has posted in the 964 section. If possible, I only want to have the lights off the car once. I got all the parts from Canadian Tire - just need brake light bulbs.

RK - thanks for the offer - the jury is out on the clear corners - I like the look, just not sure if I want to do it.

Logan - were you downtown TO this morning? I saw a black cab near Yonge & Wellington.

By my quick and un-scientific calculations a single roll of Lamin-X could do 6 - 8 cars depending on how stingy we are. The rear section of lights is about 60" x 4". Sounds cheap to me.

RK - I'm in if we can do the work together - that way I can finally see your car in person!
