I just ordered a transponder because I'm sick of the 407 charges, but even more sick of traffic. It says you can only use the transponder with the license plate registered, and that if you use it in a different car you get billed video toll charges. Is this true? I thought I'd heard just the opposite, that you can use it in any car. What's the real deal?
in theory you're supposed to use it with the registered plate, but I've never updated the info on mine so they must think that my 911 is a 1998 Grand Cherokee!
But that's the same license plate - what if you use it with a different license plate? I registered it to our Honda, but will use it in the 911 whenever I go to the track. Will that be a problem?
I haven't updated mine either. It will pickup the transponder first when you enter/exit 407. If it doesn't pick up (sometimes it doesn't for some reason), then it will bill you based on the captured plate. But in that case, they only bill you minimum charge on the both (registered transponder and the other plate).
My wife has a transponder for her A8L that I frequently "borrow" for my 2 other vehicles (996TT & QX56). Knock-on-wood but I haven't had additional billings for using vehicles with different licence plates. I just make sure that the transponder gets captured by the sensors when I get on or off the 407. Good luck!
I have 2 transponders and 3 vehicles. I move them around all the time and at this point have no idea which transponder belongs to what vehicle. I have never been billed video toll charge and my billing always shows by transponder (not what vehicle I was driving). Conclusion... you should be fine to use it in any vehicle and not pay video toll charge.
when the 407 first opened i got my transponder with 3 sets of grip strips for my other vehicles . it was oka then but they are realizing they are missing the revenue now fron additional transponder charges ..
But screw em , that was the deal i signed and that is the one i am going with.

I don't think I had "996 C4S" as a plate on my Jeep! I move my transponder from car to car all the time. I.e: if I'm using an evaluation vehicle from a manufacturer, I just put my transponder in it.
I swith my 2 transponders between at least half a dozen different vehicles. As long as they are detected, that car never got a seperate charge.
I know for a fact that ,4 years ago, the on ramp to the 407, coming from 401 eastbound, did not catch the plate number on my 928, when I blasted throught the gates at 160km/h!

Hah! I forgot about that. Heh, our neighbour's Ford Focus has a plate that reads "996 BOY". I've often considered offering them $50 for it and giving it to my dad's as a xmas present or something

When I was leaking oil really badly, it would spray up the back of the car and coat the ducktail and the license plate in a film of dirty oil. 407 can be slow at billing sometimes, and when I went 2 or 3 trips over a couple months without a bill, I thought I'd found the secret! Alas, they caught up eventually.
Thanks for the tips guys. I'll just stick with one and move it back and forth. We don't use the 407 every day. Enough to make the transponder worth it, but not enough to warrant a 2nd unit.
