I have to add caution to this as well. It collapsed just as I got a wheel back on my car. I returned it and bought a heavy duty one at Princess Auto and just drive the car up onto a 1" board to lift the wheels I want to lift before I put the jack under the car. Ghetto, but safe.

I have an aluminum Michelin jack from CT that I've had for a few years with no problems. Could you elaborate on how it failed (which part specifically-did a bolt shear, did the material fatigue, etc.) as most jacks seem to have a similar design.

I was at Princess Auto in Newmarket yesterday and they had their low profile race jacks going for $225 with double pumpers. Ya I know I have 3 jacks already but I like race jacks.

That just means your cars are too heavy. Time to strip out the interior and start drilling speed holes.

I've picked up a cheap Michelin jack last year to swap tires on the winter beater but, given the warnings in this thread, I think it's time to pick up something a bit more robust.

as I said before my Michelin jack is fine, with any jack you should always use jack stands do not rely on only the jack to support the car. As someone on this board once said these jacks are all made in the same factory in China, that may be true.

the metal side supports just folded on mine. I wish I took a picture. there was no mechanical failure just the main body folded.

Hmmm, my crappy 25 year old Cdn Tire jacks (I think there were $50 back then), look like crap, leak a bit of oil which I top up, weigh a friggin' ton, but they work well. I've put some new washers and seals in over the years too. I was think of donating them to get something lighter and more stylish, but this thread has made me rethink that decision.

Oh, and +1 on always using jack stands...cheap and effective insurance.

i got the 3 1/2 ton one from Princess Auto, and it fits under my lowered 996 turbo with room to spare. It was a floor model that was discounted to about 160.00 It weighs almost the same as the car though, so it is not something you take with you to track days.
