Default Winter Storage

I'm planning on disconnecting my battery while I store my 996 in the garage for the winter. I have read that when you reconnect the battery, you have to enter a radio code. Does anyone know how to find out what your code is, or how to reset a code prior to disconnecting the battery? The dealer recommended that I purchase a battery charger and keep it connected. Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks,Dave

I would either go the trickle charger and keep the battery connected or totally remove the battery and place it in your basement hooked up to a trickle charge. Either way, you will still need the trickle charger. Do a search on the forums here. Lots of info.

Cheers,

AL

If the radio code isn't in your owner's manual (most people write it in there when they first buy the car - my boxster had it in the manual) then you might be SOL. The dealership will be able to reset it for you, but I'm sure they'll charge you a fortune to do so.

If your car is an 2003 or newer, then it has the MOST fibre optic system so no radio code is required. 2002 and older, need the code and it is often hand written by the tech who performed the new car PDI on the label under the front hood.

FWIW

Tricklers are out, you don't want amps sent at a constant rate all winter. Use a Maintainer. One that only sends a charge when the battery needs it. C-tek comes to mind (they are the oem folks for the Porsche maintainers). You can find them on sale from time to time.

Phil is correct.
If you do need your code go to renntech.org, Loren is pretty good at finding the codes. (I think he's about 95percent on the money).
You just need the serial number and model.
A "friendly" dealer could do the same over the phone.

for my wife's audi I had to bring the car to a dealer, have them hook up to obd2 to computer to talk to computer in germany 1 hours labour and 2 days. I had the previous owner pay for this as it was negotiated at time of sale...what a pita.
if you disconnect the battery I don't think you need a maintainer.
why store a 996 anyways?

I don't have the radio issue, but I leave the battery in all winter and just hook up a C-Tek. Before I got the C0tek, I left the battery in but disconnected. I threw a regular charger on the battery just before I reconnected it in the spring and it was fine. If you have the radio issue, that will not help you much. Get a C-tek.
