Rally I understand, but figure eights in a parking lot, wasting a $1000 of good tires in 5 mnutes I do not.

Wouldn't it do the same thing on a wet tarmac and not kill your tires instantly?

My guess is that the majority of drifters use regular cheap street tires. Using R-compounds would defeat the purpose.

If you watch it live you get a different perspective. I think it would be an absolute sh!tload of fun! And I imagine it would also be an excellent way to teach car control - how to recover from spins, over/understeer, etc. Imagine how comfortable one of these guys would be if they started to lose grip of their car on a public road.

I guess it's a preference, then. I think drag-stripping a car is just as tough on it as drifting.

Since Zookie has recently acquired a couple of tires (gratis), perhaps he can demonstrate the fine art of Drifting for us old farts either behind Chapters or an empty Sherway/Ikea parking lot.
Back in the "good ole days" spinning and smoking tires were a means to getting somewhere fast http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GMc2RdFuOxI
as in the Bullitt sequence. However, as metaphoric as it may seem this younger generation "drifting" concept seems to only want to make a lot of costly noise and smoke without apparent goal or destination (other than the actual noise and smoke itself) very similar to muscle car burn outs/brake stands. Well, whatever floats your boat. "Ahh, nothing beats the smell of fresh burnt rubber in the morning"
