just in case you thought Porsche was the only company getting its shorts in a knot,I bought a 2002 BMW for my son from a dealer(GM) in Florida.. BMW Canada wants $400 for a letter of admissability to Canada, $500 for a no recalls letter. They insist the daytime runniung lights must be serviced by them with a module change at $1200( instead of in my guarage with a $20 relay.) to fulfill admissability requirment. This is certainly no way to endear themselves with customers for future vehicle service at their delership. I have some ideas how to circumvent these but any other ideas out there? I also hear Ferrari is charging $10,000 for a no recall letter.

You should be able to get a letter from a dealer in US that recalls are up to date, and if the car is on RIV list I don't think you need a letter of admissability.

read the attachment and find the car you imported. If it says admissible, you don't need the clearance letter and Canadian Tire can release the car for you.

Canadian Tire doesn't care who installs the daytime running lights as long as they work when they do the federalization inspection. So go ahead and do it yourself.

I had the dealer in the US print out a warranty service history which showed no campaigns outstanding. Worked just fine.

I was worried that Porsche NA was going to nail me with a big fee to get a no recall letter but it was free. Go figger. It was kind of funny really. When I first called the woman, at the very end she asked me if I was a dealer to which I responded no. I got the letter. Two days later, Porsche NA called and told me that they could not issue the letter because I was a dealer. I told her I already had the letter and she said they should not have issued it because I was a dealer. I again told her I wasn't a dealer and she seemed very relieved.

I had heard that Ferrari was asking for $2,000 for a recall letter.

I previously checked RIV for BMW and it says that you have to contact BMW Canada and does not include a list of eligible vehicles. I'm interested in a BMW DD so I am curious to hear how this turns out.

This was in place as at Oct 2007. The new one is active as at Jan 30 08 and on the new one, there is no longer a lisst of acceptable BMW's. It now says that you need the letter of acceptability from BMW. It's obvous that BMW now want s to control this process and make it much tougher to import a US BMW. I just dismissed BMW from my wish list.

Not really, they do that just to ensure you contact them and hand over the $500 ransom.

+1.

I also faxed a request to PCNA in Atlanta at the same time and did not hear squat from them. Luckily I didn't need them. Now if only I had waited longer than last May, when the dollar was only at 90 cents! Still, totally worth it.

Your 2002 BMW should be out of warranty. You don't need to go to a BMW dealer for daytime driving light or other work...
