I'm going nuts - 1080p or 720p?
I got my PS3 and I want to honour it with a hi-def tv in my room. My desk can fit a 37" tv MAX. The great debate is a 32" 1080p Sharp Aquos or a 37" 720p Sharp Aquos?
I'm going crazy. My computer monitor is a 30" Apple and it's outside edges measure 32" so I have a size idea. But I like the idea of a 37" TV too but I feel soon as I get it I'll say - I wonder what that'll look like in 1080p?
I feel like if Blu-ray is designed for 1080p & more games are coming 1080p I might as well do the technology justice and get a 1080p TV?
I've read about this online but you guys are a better looking errrr sounding board.

I'd say that most people's eyes would prefer the larger screen over the slight bump in pixels. Unless you're sitting only a couple feet away from the 32", theres no way you can see the difference between 720p and 1080p, and even then, you'll be struggling to see the difference. 1080p only starts to make some sense when you're going above 42".
Very few games (not even sure if any currently) are in 1080p natively. If any are displaying in 1080p, they are most likely upconverting from 720p.
As reference, I have a PS3 and an xbox360 w/HDDVD playing on my 55" 720p/1080i Sony RPTV and both look fantastic.

Well, here's my input. I just got a 42 1080p panny plasma for my office. Regular TV doesn't really look that good on it - but I sent the girlies out yesterday to get a PS3 and after farting around with it for awhile to get it to broadcast in 1080p, I'm sitting here watching Spidey 3 on blue ray and it's pretty cool.
The resolution is so good that the cgi in some of the fight scenes looks way fake because it's so clear.

I have spent a lot of time and effort on the 720p vs 1080p.
Last year at the CES I detemined that there is no perceptible difference on a 100" screen. When we compared the same movie on two different projectors on the same screen the difference when standing at the screen was a little better definition on human hair. This difference was no longer perceptible at over 4 ft. and not an issue at normal viewing distance. These were both 10K plus porjectors.
I tried the same experiment with component vs HDMI on my 1080p projector at home. Same reults on my HD 52' plasma.
Conclusion; 1080p is over rated 720p works very well.

EDIT: That ^^ was supposed to look like this
20feet x 13feet
* = corner desk
The TV will go against the West wall because my monitor is against the North wall but on my desk. Orrrrrr I was thinking, put the TV on the wall above my monitor and have it on a tilting/extending wall mount. Anywho the point is I will be rather close to it. I figure that since I'm so used to 2560x1600 resolution on my monitor I will appreciate the 1080 resolution. I just bought the Sharp 32" 1080p and Best Buy has a good return policy so I'll see how it is.
LAT, it's funny you say the only difference you could see was human hair. I was watching some trailers off http://www.apple.com/trailers/ in 720p vs 1080p and the main distinguishing feature that stood out was hair/facial hair and skin (pores, scars etc). I will be 4-5ft away so who knows. I can always return it.
Jamie, I'll have to check Spidey out when I get this hooked up. I'm also looking forward to watching the "Planet Earth" series on blu-ray as well as some IMAX blurays.
Eshel, you're right Apple might release their new monitors at MacWorld...it's about time! But, the new 30" monitor will be too much mula.
I'll have to see it when it comes (online sale). In the meantime I better get back to working on my custom PlayStation 3 controller! I think you guys will be pretty impressed!
