720 and 1080 definitly have visible differences to me, i'm extremly picky when it comes to visual quality....a byproduct of growing up with so many video games (NES to X-Box...gamers always want better graphics).
If you can swing it, why not get 1080p? Also, 1080p vs. 1080i there is a difference in two main ways: smoother more defined image on the 1080p...it's more like a computer LCD screen...a very smooth image..1080i i think is a bit sharper (but just to re-iterate the point...these differences are MINUSCULE)
I do the same thing as you brad, watch Apple trailers in HD (when my rustbucket PC isn't hanging on for dear life trying to process things)...and there is a difference in the qualities on the finer details. If you're critical of things, and being a person with some tech background, i'm sure you are, dive in and get 1080p and don't look back, i wasn't even aware they still sold new TV's capped at 720p. What is the price delta between the units you're looking at?

go 1080p
everything is moving so fast with technology that if you get 720 you may find games wont be as good and yes it is true that the eye can only tell the difference when close, i have a 60 inch 1080p lcd rear projector and the sports is awesme, no pixelation with the high speed of hockey or football. my old 1080i i could always see a little pixelation when watching sports.
just my two cents worth, and my wife works for sony so i get to rad some of the upcoming technologies before they are released to the press here.
watch out for OLED its come soon.... already released in Japan.

OLED won't come out in larger sizes for a while (read: 10-15 years since OLED in like..21" sizes is about the same as a 50" LCD), but i'm definitly looking forward to it.
I don't even want to think about how much an 82" OLED would cost
Brad makes a good point though, the pace of development necessitates 1080 i or p just to stay even close to current. don't forget about 120hz or watever the new framerate there is that makes movies look more realistic.

SONY's first release is an 11 inch, but you never know. they can move things quite fast. and having a 82 inch OLED would be awesome..... but lets see where is goes forst, besdie in our BB and walkmans and such.

I just bought a 50 inch Pioneer 1080p Kuro plasma, and it is absolutely stunning. I've had a 42 inch Panasonic for a couple of years, and this Pioneer is SO much sweeter. I did lots of research before I bought either of them. You have to see the latest Pioneer plasmas before you decide.
Aside from the plug for that particular brand, I wouldn't buy anything except a 1080p set these days. While you will still be paying a premium, it's money well spent.

The problem with picking a TV is that for $200 more you can always get something a little bigger&better, agh!

I have a samsung HLR4264 which I am very happy with. CBC Video editor pushed me towards this set over others. Besides ... it takes 4 minutes to change the bulb if it packs in.
Works in all formats ... watch nothing but HDTV as well as upconverted to 1080i DVD's ....

AGHHHHHH!
The 32" Sharp 1080p came today. BUT, it isn't as tall as my 30" Apple...hmmmmmmmmmmm. What the hell, I think I'm spoiled, well I am with my monitor. I think 37" would be better? Oh I have no idea.....the 37" Sharp 1080p is $300 more with tax.

Some peoples reporting banding issue on those Sharp models, and need to do a few return before they found a good one. Do you encounter anything like that?
